Jon Toth, Justin Rigg among former Wildcats cut by NFL teams on Tuesday
Unfortunately, Lynn Bowden wasn’t the only former Kentucky Wildcat cut by an NFL team ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
By 4:00 p.m. EST, all 32 franchises were required to cut their rosters down to 53 players. Bowden, who was a member of the Miami Dolphins during the preseason, was one of the most notable names released across the league. Another pair of one-time ‘Cats were also cut on Tuesday: C Jon Toth (Washington Commanders) and TE Justin Rigg (Cincinnati Bengals).
Toth (2012-2017) is one of the greatest centers to ever come through the Kentucky program, recording 48 consecutive starts from his redshirt sophomore to senior season. He was unselected in the 2017 NFL Draft but made several practice teams before getting his first true opportunity in 2021 with the then-Washington Football Team. While Toth didn’t play a game last year for WFT, he was a member of the active roster.
As for Rigg (2016-2021), he was cut by the Bengals despite hauling in a touchdown score on Sunday in preseason finale action. He signed an undrafted free agent deal with Cincinnati after his name wasn’t called in the most recent NFL Draft. While at Kentucky, Rigg set a school record for most games played at 63, including 35 starts and 16 in a row.

Other Kentucky players released previously throughout the month of August were S Yusuf Corker (New York Giants), CB Chris Westry (Carolina Panthers), CB Quandre Mosely (Dallas Cowboys), CB Lonnie Johnson (Houston Texans; later claimed by Tennessee Titans), RB AJ Rose (Los Angeles Rams), and DL TJ Carter (New Orleans Saints; later claimed by Los Angeles Rams).
Additionally, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell was not among the players cut on Tuesday, meaning he’ll spend another season on an NFL roster. Snell was in a preseason battle for the backup tailback position.
