Greetings from Amalie Arena, where it’s been an entertaining afternoon of basketball. To start things off, No. 8 seed Texas A&M upset No. 1 seed Auburn 67-62, a result that broke a good number of peacocking Tiger hearts in Tampa. While it would have been extremely satisfying to see the Cats avenge their regular-season loss to Auburn with a win in the SEC Tournament Championship, watching KD Johnson go scoreless and the Tigers drop their first game of the postseason was pretty sweet, I won’t lie.

The second game wasn’t quite as thrilling. No. 4 seed Arkansas beat No. 5 seed LSU 79-67 to advance to play Texas A&M in the semifinals. The Razorbacks are ranked No. 20 in the NET, so tomorrow’s game is a Quad 1 opportunity for the Aggies. Win and you have to think the committee will give their resume a longer look. Speaking of the committee, here they are watching last night’s games:

Looks thrilling. Here’s the updated SEC Tournament bracket:

Some other notes as we wait for the real action to begin…

— Kentucky already has a strong case for a No. 1 seed, and Auburn’s loss to Texas A&M certainly helps. Joe Lunardi tweeted that the Tigers’ defeat leaves a clear path for the Cats to sneak up to the top line:

Of course, this is all for naught if the Cats don’t take care of business vs. Vanderbilt.

— Yesterday, Buzz Williams said John Calipari should be the league’s spokesman for saying teams that finished 9-9 in SEC play should make the tournament because the league is so strong. The Aggies were one of those teams and today’s upset of Auburn was a much-needed boost to their NCAA Tournament resume. After the game, Williams referenced Cal’s remarks again.

“I think what Coach Cal said on Sunday was right, and if what he said is right, that’s great. We’ve won two games since then. Is that enough? I don’t know. The reason I don’t know is I am wise enough to understand that if we would not have won seven of our last eight games, it wouldn’t even be a conversation.

“And so it’s hard for me, okay, it’s happened, now do I respond? I don’t know, because I’ve been so completely immersed in how can we try to win the next game. What does the committee think of that? I don’t know, but I do know that we get to play again tomorrow. We don’t know who we’re going to play, and so we got a lot of work to do between now and the next time I see you.”

Big Buzz Williams fan here.

— These guys are wandering around Tampa:

I actually spotted one of them from my hotel balcony while watching the pep rally. I’m glad to have the story behind the costume.

— Coach O hit the halfcourt shot in shootaround:

It’s awesome to have that energy back on Kentucky’s sideline.

— Want more from shootaround? Jacob Toppin was mic’d up and entertaining:

— Look who I ran into yesterday at the media hotel: Davion Mintz’s dog Ghost:

I’m glad Ghost got in. He’s just as sweet as you’d imagine.

I’ll leave you with Dr. Mike’s gallery from the first two games. The KSR Pregame Show for Kentucky vs. Vanderbilt, live from poolside at the Marriott hotel, starts momentarily on 630 WLAP and iHeart Radio.
