The season came to an end for the 2022-23 Kentucky women’s basketball team on Friday night in Greenville. After winning multiple games again in the SEC Tournament, Kyra Elzy’s team was knocked out by Tennessee officially ending a disappointing season.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the only bad news to occur over the weekend.

Freshman guard Kennedy Cambridge announced her intentions to enter the transfer portal on Sunday evening.

That could be a significant blow to the program as Elzy is now 49-40 (19-28) after three seasons in Lexington.

A four-star recruit out of Nashville (Tenn.) Ensworth, Cambridge helped lead her high school team to three state titles and won Miss Basketball in Tennessee before committing to Kentucky over Auburn and Ole Miss.

“We are incredibly excited to officially welcome Kennedy to Big Blue Nation,” Elzy said in the team’s press release. “It’s rare in the late singing period you have a chance to sign such an incredible talent like Kennedy. We absolutely fell in love with her and her family during the recruiting process.

One of Elzy’s biggest recruiting wins is officially out of Lexington after just one season.

Cambridge played in 19 games this season earning one start in 14.4 minutes per game. The 5-8 guard averaged 2.7 points per game while shooting 48.8 percent from the field. Now a huge offseason begins.

Elzy and her staff must address the roster both in high school recruiting and via the transfer portal to make sure a repeat last-place finish in the SEC does not happen again. Now the women’s basketball team will have an extra scholarship to fill following the news of Kennedy Cambridge being a one-and-done at Kentucky.
