Kenny Brooks is 'enjoying the moment' because 'we've been in a tough slate'
When Kentucky lost to Texas A&M, it felt like the end of the world. Shots weren’t falling, and an opportunity for the Cats to cement themselves as a Top 10 team in the country slipped right through their fingers.
It was especially unfortunate because it felt like A&M was one of the more winnable games remaining on the schedule, and dropping a game like that can hurt. Starting with No. 19 Alabama on January 30th, Kentucky’s schedule the rest of the way is brutal.
However, Kenny Brooks isn’t worried about what’s ahead. Instead, he’s sitting back and enjoying the moment in his first season at Kentucky.
“We’ve been in a tough slate, Phoenix,” Brooks explained in the Arkansas postgame press conference. “You know every game is tough. To say that the Vanderbilts and Floridas and everybody’s not tough — every game is tough, and we approach it one game at a time.”
Brooks continued, “If we look down on the schedule — like I didn’t know who we played on Thursday until somebody told me, and honestly, as a coach, when you have a team and you’re enjoying the moment and you’re enjoying everything that you’re doing with them, I don’t want to look down the line. I don’t want to say we only have 10 more games with Georgia Amoore. We’re just going to enjoy every moment of it.”
And not only are Brooks and the team staying in the moment because it’s a nice thing to do, but they also see it as the best way there is when it comes to handling business on the court. After all, that mindset aided Kentucky in their 89-69 win over Arkansas on Sunday.

“I think by us staying in the moment, it allows us to really focus on the task at hand, and the task at hand is what’s right in front of you. So [the players] do it, they do a tremendous job of understanding that. Today’s today. We got to make sure that we do something great today, and so that’s how we’re going to get through the whole rest of the season.”
Teonni Key, who had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double against the Razorbacks, added to Brooks’ sentiment.
“I think just like he said, just focusing on the next one ahead of us, like the next one is the most important one,” Key noted. “Just being who we are as a team on and off the court, we have our trust and connectivity with each other — including the staff — so they know what’s best for us. We know what’s best for us.”
