When you take a look across the roster, it’s pretty clear as to what Kenny Brooks was going after this offseason: size and shooting.

With Clara Strack (6-foot-5) and Clara Silva (6-foot-7) down in the post, Kentucky should be able to get plenty of looks close to the rim. After all, if you have those weapons at your disposal, why not use them?

“You don’t just want a 6-foot-7 player as a decoration running up and down the floor,” Brooks said following the team’s scrimmage in the Blue-White Preseason Event. “Our offensive system is predicated on getting involved inside. We were that last year, we were that for the last four or five years with Elizabeth Kitley.”

Of course, if Strack and Silva are starting to heat up, they’re going to draw extra attention from the defense. That’s why you have shooters lined up across the three-point line, and that’s why it’s so important that Strack and Silva be great passers as well.

“We like to play inside-out, and we’ve got shooters around [Strack and Silva] so that if they get double-teamed, they can kick it back out — both of them,” Brooks explained. “Clara Strack and Clara Silva, they’re two of the best passing post players I’ve ever had. They can command the basketball, get it down there, get it low, get a double team, they can kick it back out, and we’re conditioned for that.”

While both were already slated to play for Brooks this season even before he took the Kentucky job, bringing in Strack and Silva will be huge for the ‘Cats given how important they will be in Kentucky’s new offensive system.
