Bush Hamdan will be joined by a familiar face in Lexington. According to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports, Derek Shay is departing Marshall to join the Kentucky coaching staff as a senior analyst.

Shay is leaving his position as the tight ends coach for the Thundering Herd. He previously worked with Hamdan as an analyst at Missouri in 2022. Prior to taking that role at Missouri, Shay spent three seasons as a graduate assistant tight ends coach at LSU.

It’s become protocol for Kentucky offensive coordinators to receive at least one off-field analyst hire. Scott Woodward accompanied Liam Coen to Kentucky in 2021 and was promoted after Jovon Bouknight’s off-the-field arrest. Last year former UMass assistant Brian Picucci was a quality control coach for Coen.

Shay gives Kentucky three offensive quality control analysts for the 2024 season. Josh Estes-Waugh and Mark Perry have spent multiple years in their current roles. Drake Jackson (offensive line) and Andrew Verboys (receivers) are Kentucky’s two offensive graduate assistants.

Bush Hamdan will participate in his first spring practice as the Kentucky offensive coordinator two weeks from today on Tuesday, March 19.
