Kentucky has started SEC play off hot, to say the least, but the Cats were set to square off against the upset-capable Texas A&M Aggies. They knocked off then No. 25 Ole Miss at home on January 5th, but they’ve also suffered some really bad losses along the way. This was a game that Kentucky should win coming in, but should isn’t always how it turns out.

Kentucky, unfortunately, would not get the win in College Station, falling to Texas A&M 61-55. The Cats are now 16-2 (5-1 SEC).

Just when you thought the slow starts were behind Kentucky, another one occurred in College Station. The Cats started the game missing their first seven shots, trailing 9-8 at the first media timeout. However, after getting a few to fall in (4-18, that is) while going 6-6 from the free throw line, Kentucky was able to claim a 14-11 lead through the first quarter of play.

As for the second quarter, it was much of the same. Through 20 minutes of action, Kentucky had still not made a three-pointer (0-8). Georgia Amoore led the Cats in scoring at the half with 10 points to her name. At the break, Kentucky led 30-25. Amoore would end the game with 15 points and five assists against the Aggies.

The third quarter was just as tight and competitive as the first two. Kentucky would get off to 40-30 lead, but to end the period, the Aggies went on a 12-6 run, making it a 46-42 game with 10 minutes left in regulation.

As ugly as everything had been for Kentucky, Teonni Key — outside of her foul trouble — had been a big positive. She had 15 points and nine rebounds to end the third quarter, and she would end the night with 20 points and nine rebounds.

In the fourth quarter, Texas A&M would retake the lead with 4:56 to, up 50-49 following the final media timeout of the game. Kentucky was on the ropes, and following a Kenny Brooks timeout with the game knotted at 52, the Aggies would go on a 5-0 run, and from there, Kentucky couldn’t catch back up.

Next up on the schedule are the Arkansas Razorbacks (8-12, 1-4 SEC) on Sunday, and that game will be played in Historic Memorial Coliseum at noon ET on SEC Network.
