WATCH: English Kentucky fan describes fanhood across the pond
Everyone loves a good story on Christmas, and this one speaks to the core of what it is to be a Kentucky fan.
While in London to cover Kentucky vs. Michigan at The O2 Arena, KSR’s videographer Steven Peake met a father and son from Derby County in England. The father came to Kentucky on a business trip in 2005 and attended the UK vs. Auburn football game at Commonwealth Stadium. He brought his son home a Kentucky hat, and the seeds of fandom were planted. Several years later, the son took an interest in Kentucky Basketball and became a superfan, staying up late at night to follow John Calipari’s team, and when Mark Stoops came to Lexington, the football team as well.
So, when Kentucky’s game vs. Michigan in London was first announced in 2019, the father and son made plans to be at the O2. A few postponements later, not even England playing Senegal in the World Cup at the exact same time could stop them.
“This is once in a lifetime. That, I can watch the highlights when I get home.”
Thankfully, he and his dad finished the day 2-0. Check out the entire conversation below.
