Kentucky will wear 1993 throwback uniforms against Louisville
For years, the Big Blue Nation had been very vocal about wanting a uniform refresh. Many folks were sick of the checkerboards and wanted something that resembled Kentucky’s traditional uniforms.
That wish was granted for the 2022-23 season as Kentucky unveiled some cool looking uniforms for Big Blue Bahamas in August and got brand new jerseys with an alternate look for the regular season. However, the basketball program still had a few wrinkles up its sleeve.
We got one on Saturday morning when the official Kentucky Basketball Twitter account announced that the Cats will be wearing 1993 retro jerseys for the matchup with archrival Louisville.
The 1992-93 team was Rick Pitino’s fourth team in Lexington. Led by All-American Jamal Mashburn, the Wildcats went 30-4 starting the season with 11 straight wins and finishing 13-3 in SEC play. UK won the SEC Tournament in Lexington and made the program’s first Final Four since 1984 with four consecutive double-digit wins in the NCAA Tournament. The Cats scored 100-plus points in a Sweet 16 win over Wake Forest and an Elite Eight win over Florida State in Charlotte.

Kentucky then lost a heartbreaker to Michigan in overtime in the Final Four down in New Orleans as Mashburn fouled out and the Fab Five pulled away late. The Cats finished the year 30-4 and would then win the program’s first national title in 18 years just a few seasons later with arguably the best college basketball team of all-time.
Now the current Cats are hoping that these retro jerseys can bring some good vibes to a laboring Kentucky team. The Wildcats are struggling to score points right now and that was never a problem back in 1993.
Regardless, Kentucky has stepped their uniform game up in a big way. The latest new wrinkle might be their best work yet. Will the denim jerseys be next?
