For only the third time in its 146-year history, the running of the Kentucky Derby will not take place on the first Saturday in May. Tuesday morning Churchill Downs officials unveiled the latest measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, announcing the fastest two minutes is sports has been postponed to September 5. The running of the race was last delayed in 1945 as the Allies fought to end World War II. The fate of the other Triple Crown races remains unclear. All Kentucky Derby Festival events will be postponed to coincide with the Labor Day race date, pushing Thunder Over Louisville to August 15. The move to Labor Day weekend creates a conflict for Kentuckians. Mark Stoops' Wildcats are scheduled to open the 2019-20 season at Kroger Field against Eastern Michigan on the same day.
