The Kentucky football program has announced seven team captains going into the 2022 season, including three on offense and four on defense.

Quarterback Will Levis is joined by running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. and offensive lineman Kenneth Horsey on offense, with linebackers DeAndre Square and Jacquez Jones, along with pass-rushers Jordan Wright and J.J. Weaver representing the defense.

The announcement came this afternoon:

It’s the third year in a row Square has been named a team captain, with the graduate senior making it clear he’s “honored and thankful to be in this position” following the announcement. He’s just the second player in school history to be elected team captain three consecutive seasons, joining Josh Paschal who accomplished the feat from 2019-21.

It’s the second consecutive year Levis and Rodriguez have been named team captains. Jones, Wright, Weaver and Horsey are all first-year captains.

Levis finished his 2021 campaign with 2,826 passing yards and 24 touchdowns to go with 376 rushing yards and nine scores on the ground, while Rodriguez put up 1,379 rushing yards and nine scores. Horsey started in all 13 games for the Wildcats and was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. As for the defense, Square finished with 81 total tackles, three sacks, one forced fumble and one pick in 2021, while Jones went for a career-high 82 tackles to go with four pass deflections, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pick. Weaver added 34 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two interceptions and one pass deflection, while Wright finished with 30 tackles, four pass deflections and one sack.

Kentucky football’s captains in 2021 included Square, Levis and Rodriguez to go with Paschal, Josh Ali, Yusuf Corker, Luke Fortner and Marquan McCall.
