Kentucky Football extended three notable scholarship offers on Friday

A few times every week, high schoolers from across the country will announce on social media that they’ve received offers from the University of Kentucky to play football. This is happening more and more often as of late though, particularly with the class of 2023 kids. In-person recruiting is about to open back up, so it makes sense that the coaching staff would send out offers right before face-to-face visits are allowed. Today was one of those busy days, but the scholarships handed out were not to your everyday recruit.

On Friday, three notable high school prospects tweeted out that they had picked up an offer from Kentucky: Wesley Grimes (class of 2022), Dylan Edwards (2023), and Bo Edmundson (2023). These weren’t the only offers announced on Friday, however, they were the ones that caught attention over the others. Here’s what stands out about this trio, starting with Edmundson.

Bo Edmundson (2023): 3-star PRO QB from Austin, TX – 6-foot-2, 195 pounds

The state of Texas isn’t exactly a pipeline for Kentucky Football, but that’s how courageous the staff has become with their recruiting strategy. And for the player they offered to be a highly-rated, young quarterback from Austin, makes it all the more aggressive. Does this mean Kentucky will ultimately steal Bo Edmundson, who is ranked as one of the 15-best pro-style quarterbacks in his class, away from the likes of the Longhorns? Not necessarily, but UK isn’t afraid to go out and see if they can pull it off. Edmundson is just a sophomore in high school and already has offers from Penn State, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, SMU, and Purdue, along with a few others, so why not jump on board with a new pro-passing offensive coordinator as the conversation starter?

Playing five games during the 2020 season for Lake Travis High School, Edmundson threw for 1,409 yards, 17 touchdowns, and two interceptions with a completion percentage of 68 percent. He was also tabbed as the District 26-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year. The head coach of Lake Travis, Tommy Mangino, recently spent some time on Kentucky’s staff as the offensive quality control coach.

Dylan Edwards (2023): 3-star RB from Derby, KS – 5-foot-9, 165 pounds

Ranked by 247 Sports as the second-best all-purpose running back in the class of 2023, Dylan Edwards receiving some Kentucky love still early in his recruiting process is a good sign. Ever since running backs coach John Settle was brought on board, the offers going out from the staff have usually not included many ball carriers. That position is well-covered right now for the ‘Cats, but they do need to look down the road. The fact that Edwards is such a talented running back is as good a start as any.

He holds just five offers right now, the other four coming from Iowa State, Kansas State, Memphis, and Tennessee Tech, but he’s steadily rising in popularity ever since a stellar sophomore season. Edwards, who also lines up at wide receiver while taking back kick returns, posted 1,833 rushing yards on nearly nine yards per carry in addition to 25 touchdowns, helping lead Derby High School to the Kansas 6A state championship last fall. He is absolutely a name to keep an eye on.

Wesley Grimes (2022): 3-star WR from Raleigh, NC – 6-foot-3, 180 pounds

The lone high school junior on this shortlist, Wesley Grimes has caught the eye of new offensive coordinator Liam Coen and John Settle. Grimes had already picked up offers from multiple ACC schools such as Duke, Louisville, N.C. State, Virginia, and Wake Forest, along with a couple of SEC programs in Vanderbilt and Tennessee before Kentucky came calling. Both 247 Sports and Rivals have him rated as a three-star prospect.

Grimes could be a realistic get for the ‘Cats if the staff makes a big push.
