A life ended too soon was honored Friday night with lights across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

On Monday, 17-year-old Andrew Dodson passed away from a head injury he suffered during a spring football scrimmage at Pulaski County High School. Dodson was a junior tight end for the Maroons. His father Alan told the Herald-Leader that the injury occurred after his son was tackled — “a simple, clean tackle” — and his head hit the turf, causing blunt-force trauma to the brain. After major surgery, Andrew never woke up.

Pulaski County head football coach John Hines organized a tribute for Andrew Dodson that spread like wildfire across the state. Starting at 7:30 pm Friday night, the traditional kickoff time for Kentucky high school football games, the lights above Pulaski County High School’s football stadium were turned on for 80 minutes, the number Andrew Dodson wore for the Maroons.

Heartbroken by the loss, Kentucky’s Mark Stoops was among the many who were moved to take action and join the rest of the Bluegrass State in honoring the life of Andrew Dodson. Touching every corner of the Commonwealth, it’s a moving tribute for a young man taken far too soon.
