Kentucky generated 6th most social media interactions in April among WBB programs
Kyra Elzy’s program is riding some serious momentum as of late.
According to SkullSparks, which works with college sports all over the nation on digital strategy, Kentucky generated the sixth-most social media interactions among all official accounts of women’s college basketball programs throughout April 2022. Across Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, the Wildcats generated over 100,000 interactions last month. Four of the five programs ahead of Kentucky made this past year’s Final Four.
UK’s Instagram generated 57,287 total interactions, Twitter drew in 18,055, and Facebook collected 31,281 for a total of 106,623. Only six schools eclipsed the 100k interactions mark, with Kentucky just sneaking over the threshold. The UConn Huskies generated the most interactions by far with more than 1.1 million while South Carolina came in second with 855k. The next-closest program, Stanford, saw just 181,876 total interactions while Louisville came in fourth with 110,650.
So why is Kentucky, led by third-year head coach Kyra Elzy, doing so well across the Internet right now? Well, for starters, some quality employees in the UK Athletics office. But even more so, the buzz that Elzy has been building with recruiting over the previous six-plus weeks. Having the first No. 1 WNBA Draft pick in school history probably helped out a bit, too.
In the month of April, incoming freshman Kennedy Cambridge signed her National Letter of Intent, Buffalo grad transfer Adebola Adeyeye joined the program, and another soon-to-be freshman, Zennia Thomas, committed to the ‘Cats for the upcoming season. Additionally, Rhyne Howard was the easy choice for the top WNBA selection by the Atlanta Dream.

There was plenty to discuss.
Things have only gotten better for the program as we move past the halfway point of May. A pair of SEC transfers, Eniya Russell (South Carolina) and Ajae Petty (LSU), landed with Kentucky, Robyn Benton confirmed her to return for a fifth season, and Maddie Scherr (the 2020 Miss Kentucky Basketball winner) decided to transfer away from Oregon in order to come back home. And oh yeah, Rhyne Howard looks like the easy choice for WNBA Rookie of the Year through five outings.
The first few months of the new year were filled with incredible peaks and valleys. A 9-11 start for the team transformed into the first SEC Tournament title in 40 years. Then an unexpected first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament followed by the loss of four players to the transfer portal shifted the tides once again. But Elzy dug in and fully delivered on the recruiting trail to craft a roster that is of her own design.
Numbers don’t lie — there is plenty to be excited about with Kentucky Women’s Basketball.
