Kentucky women’s basketball’s last WNBA Draft pick happened in 2022 when Rhyne Howard was the first overall pick. Up until recently, the program had been trending in the wrong direction since Howard’s departure. But with Kenny Brooks now in charge, the Wildcats could have another draft selection in 2025.

Over at ESPN, senior writer Michael Voepel released his initial 2025 WNBA Mock Draft. In it, he had Kentucky point guard Georgia Amoore going with the final pick (12th overall) of the first round.

“Amoore, like (South Carolina’s Te-Hina) Paopao, opted to stay for a fifth year,” Voepel wrote. “She was at Virginia Tech for four seasons, then followed coach Kenny Brooks when he took over at Kentucky. As is the case with (Texas’ Rori) Harmon, there’s some concern about her small stature. Still, Amoore has a been a terrific scorer and facilitator in college, averaging 14.7 points and 5.2 assists for her Hokies career while shooting 36.1% from 3-point range. How she plays in the SEC this year will factor into her draft assessment.”

Amoore followed Brooks to Lexington from Virginia Tech, where the 5-foot-6 floor general was named an All-American in 2023-24 by multiple outlets with the Hokies. Amoore was also a two-time All-ACC First Team member during her final two seasons in Blacksburg and even made the 2020-21 ACC All-Freshman Team.

A native of Australia, Amoore could have easily heard her name called in the most recent 2024 WNBA Draft, possibly as a first-round pick. The WNBA Draft is comprised of three rounds with 12 picks each. That being said, a 13th expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries, will join the league in 2025, although details of the draft expansion have not yet been released. The draft is typically held in April.

Going into what will be her final college season, Amoore is expected to be Kentucky’s best player and leader of the team. She averaged 18.8 points and 6.8 assists per game last season at Virginia Tech. Brooks had to retool nearly the entire roster, only keeping two players from the previous season, and built his debut team in Lexington around Amoore.

Not a bad player to help kickstart a new era off with, huh?
