Ten years ago, Kentucky unveiled a new uniform combination that brought a little magic to Commonwealth Stadium.
The Cats wore all-black uniforms with shiny new chrome helmets in year two of the Mark Stoops era. As the teams took the field, The Backstreet Boys’ Kevin Richardson remarked in the pressbox as he passed through, “Wow! Those are awesome.” They looked good, so Kentucky played good. The Cats overcame a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to knock off South Carolina with a Bud Dupree pick-six with less than three minutes on the clock.
Ten years later and the chrome domes still look sharp.
The metallic helmets will make their 2024 debut Saturday night at Kroger Field when Auburn makes the trip to Lexington for just the second time since 2010. Unlike that first game with the chrome helmets, Kentucky will wear blue jerseys and pants.
The UK Sports Information Department does not track the stats on helmets, but they do have numbers on the uniforms. Mark Stoops’ teams are 19-10 in all-blue uniforms, with one loss this season to South Carolina. Kentucky is still looking for its first October win, where Stoops is 17-24 all-time.

Auburn is encouraging its fans to wear orange as the Tigers bring their road whites to Lexington, a place where they’ve had plenty of success over the years. Kentucky has not defeated Auburn in Lexington since 1966.
