A year after winning the SEC Tournament, the Kentucky women’s basketball team is the lowest-seeded team in the event.

Despite a career-high 27 points from Maddie Scherr, the Wildcats closed out the 2022-23 regular season on Sunday with an 83-63 loss to Tennessee on Senior Day at Memorial Coliseum. Kentucky closed out the season by losing seven straight games, including a loss to Texas A&M, who previously only had one win in conference play. The Cats finished 10-18 overall and just 2-14 in SEC play.

The two-win SEC season will force Kyra Elzy’s Cats to start their journey in the SEC Tourney early. Kentucky is the 14-seed and will face the 11-seed Florida on the opening day of the conference tournament. The Cats will take the court in Greenville, South Carolina this Wednesday at approximately 1:30 pm EST. Tickets are available online through the SEC ticket office.

Multiple players transferred from last year’s conference championship team. Almost just as many suffered significant injuries. Pretty much everything that could go wrong has gone wrong for this Kentucky women’s basketball team. Nevertheless, it’s disheartening to see the team that was crowned champs of the SEC fall so hard, so fast.

Last year’s squad defied odds by making a miraculous run in the conference tournament. Maybe there’s a little magic left in the tank to end this disappointing season on a high.
