WATCH: Mark Pope, Kentucky players discuss loss to Ohio State
Kentucky was riding high heading into tonight’s game in New York City, up to No. 4 in the polls and off to a 10-1 start. Tonight, the Cats hit a wall, unable to accomplish anything on either side of the court, resulting in an 85-65 loss to Ohio State.
Mark Pope, Otega Oweh, and Andrew Carr met with reporters afterward to try to talk through what happened. Pope was particularly perplexed by the Cats’ struggles inside. Kentucky was 7-23 on layups. On the other end, the Buckeyes gashed the Cats, outscoring them in the paint 36-24.
“They rejected us a ton,” Pope said. “It was really hard for us. It was just surprising. We’ve been pretty solid in that space.”
Pope gave Bruce Thornton, who finished with 30 points, a special mention.
“We tried a bunch of different scheme changes and at the end of the day, I mean, Bruce Thornton was too good for us. I mean, that was just today, you know, he was just too good for us today. Kind of, everything we tried seemed, it seemed like he had a pretty good answer for us.”

Kentucky’s struggles extended far past the paint. The Cats shot just 17-57 (29.8%) from the floor and 4-22 (18.2%) from three. Otega Oweh tried to put the team on his back, finishing with a team-high 21 points, 15 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.
“I mean, that’s just college basketball,” Oweh said of Kentucky’s poor shooting. “Sometimes the ball won’t go into the rim, but just have to find other ways, and we didn’t today, but we will next time.”
