Kentucky is committed to using the transfer portal to address needs. Over the last two years, the Wildcats have added 14 players to their roster from the portal and a few are expected to play big roles in 2022.

On3’s scouting department is busy at work with high school rankings but is also diving into the transfer portal game. The website has produced rankings for 149 players from the portal, and Kentucky has two players who rank inside of the top 100.

59.) Tayvion Robinson

In three years at Virginia Tech, Tayvion Robinson recorded 113 receptions for 1,555 yards in 36 career games with 30 total starts. The top-500 recruit in the class of 2019 was also the primary punt returner for the Hokies averaging 13.7 yards per return last season.

As a junior, Robinson received 74 targets playing for an inefficient passing game and led the Hokies in receptions (44) and receiving touchdowns (5).

In On3’s rankings, Robinson checks in at No. 59 overall with a four-star (90.00) rating as the transfer is the No. 13 ranked receiver. Robinson will be stepping into the slot role in Kentucky’s offense and should receive a heavy volume of targets as the senior projects to be the No. 1 receiver for Will Levis.

85.) Keidron Smith

The last big addition for the program came after spring ball finished when Ole Miss transfer Keidron Smith picked Kentucky over Indiana, Missouri, and Virginia Tech. The super senior has just one year of eligibility remaining but was a major add for Kentucky.

The Wildcats had holes to fill in the secondary following the loss of Vito Tisdale due to a knee injury suffered in spring practice. Smith will help fill those holes as a versatile player who could play multiple spots in the secondary.

The South Florida prospect started games at both cornerback and safety during his Ole Miss career and did not miss a game in four years with three defensive coordinators. With over 200 career tackles and a history of ball production — 21 pass breakups, 5 interceptions — Smith will fill a much-needed role.

The Ole Miss transfer lands just inside the top-100 as a top-10 cornerback in this transfer class.

Quarterback shakeout

Teams use the transfer portal to fill holes on their roster, but the quarterback position remains most important. The biggest impact the portal has had on the sport is to allow active quarterback movement so programs cannot hoard talent at the most important position in football.

In On3’s rankings, four quarterbacks landed inside the top-10, and 15 were ranked inside the top-100. Expect most of these players to be starters this season, and a few will emerge as big-time playmakers for their new programs.

Here’s how the Qs shake out:
