There was so much to like about the first team Mark Pope put together, but if you are still only cautiously optimistic about the future, or the pain of Kentucky’s Sweet 16 loss to Tennessee is translating to outright pessimism, let’s focus on some objective evidence to convince you otherwise. Namely, no team in Kentucky history has ever shot or made more 3-pointers than this 2024-25 team.

The Wildcats finished with 341 made 3-pointers this season, which bested the 1992-93 team by a whopping one bucket. Defenders of Babe Ruth might argue it took this year’s team two extra games to get that record, as they played 36 games compared to the 1992-93 team’s 34 games, but a record is a record is a record. No astricks here.

Back in June, I predicted this team would shatter the school record for most 3-point attempts in a season. Based on Mark Pope’s playing style at BYU, it almost seemed like a certainty. Not to brag, but I was absolutely, 100 percent, definitely correct.

Kentucky made 910 3-pointers this season, exactly 22 more than the previous record set by Rick Pitino’s 1991-92 team. This equalled a 3-point shooting clip of 37.5 percent, which ties for sixth best all-time in Kentucky history.

It is weird to set the school record for most 3-point attempts and makes, yet still think this team should have shot more of them. With few players possessing a knack to beat their man off the dribble with regularity, draining 3s was this team’s best shot of running up the score.

Regardless, Kentucky fans wanted a modern offense, and Mark Pope has brought exactly that. If the first year is any indication, this basketball program is in great hands.
