Kentucky Softball kicks off 2022 season against Wisconsin Badgers

Softball season is officially here, BBN. The Wildcats will begin their 2022 season on Thursday night at the Northern Lights Southern Nights tournament in Leesburg, Florida, at 6 p.m. against the Wisconsin Badgers.
Though Wisconsin is not ranked coming into the season, they are returning quite a bit of talent. 16 Badgers returned this season, including all of their projected starters. The team’s No. 1 pitcher Maddie Schwartz and 2021 batting average leader Fiona Girardot are among those returners.
UK will compete in six games in the tournament. After Wisconsin, they’ll play a doubleheader against Michigan State and Liberty on Friday afternoon. Saturday they will take on Iowa before facing their toughest opponent in the event on Sunday: No. 13 Virginia Tech.
The Wildcats will start the year ranked No. 19 in the country, according to D1 Softball. It is the 13th-straight season the ‘Cats have made the top 25 under head coach Rachel Lawson.

Though Kentucky is coming off an impressive 2021 season, they’re hungry for more. The ‘Cats went 43-16 last season before falling to No. 3 Alabama in the NCAA Super Regional. UK has made it to the Super Regional round in the last several NCAA Tournaments, but have struggled to get over that final hump and make it to Oklahoma City. But this season could be different.
On Tuesday’s Media Day, super senior Lauren Johnson explained just how bad the ‘Cats want to take that final step. “You’re never satisfied with just making it to Supers,” Johnson said. “It’s a really cool experience but there’s always something more.”
The ‘Cats have an absolutely packed home schedule this season. They will welcome No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 10 Missouri and No. 12 Michigan to John Scropp Stadium, as well as a loaded slate of SEC talent. For more information on purchasing tickets, check out UK Athletics.
