Kentucky softball lost its fourth straight SEC series, this one coming against No. 17 Mississippi State over the weekend. Luckily, the Wildcats were able to steal one win from the Bulldogs on Senior Night to celebrate the Wildcat veterans properly.

Blown Out in Game 1

Due to rain on Friday night, the first game of the series was pushed to Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats did not have a great first showing, losing to the Bulldogs 12-2.

Mississippi State wasted no time getting some runs on the board. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Things slowed down in the game until the bottom of the fourth inning as Peyton Plotts hit a solo home run to put Kentucky within one.

From there on out, Mississippi State exploded offensively, putting up 10 more runs before the end of the game.

Kentucky did get a highlight in the bottom of the seventh. Hallie Mitchell was able to hit a solo home run right before her senior night ceremony. That might have been the play Kentucky needed to gain momentum before the second game of the doubleheader.

Cats Score Big On Senior Night

Kentucky sent out its seniors with a bang, winning 14-8 over Mississippi State on senior night in the second game of the doubleheader. Three seniors, Hallie Mitchell, Alexia Lacatena, and McKenzie Bump, were celebrated before the game for their commitment to the program.

Battling a back injury, Lacatena was given the start on the mound. She was only able to pitch an inning due to the injury, but got the last batter out on a strikeout. Unfortunately, Bump is out for the season with an ACL tear and could not play.

Mitchell had three plate appearances, earning one hit and a walk on her senior night, plus the home run she had in the prior game.

The player of the game was not a senior, but junior Karissa Hamilton. She hit two home runs against the Bulldogs and had six RBIs for the game.

Peyton Plotts and Allie Blum also had home runs in this game, the second of the day for Plotts and her 14th of the season.

Bulldogs Win The Series

With the series tied 1-1 after Saturday night, Mississippi State grabbed the deciding game 5-0 over Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats struck out 10 times and only had three hits.

It was just another one of those games for Kentucky in which they could not get anything going offensively. Lately, it seems that the ‘Cats either hit several home runs in a game or do not score at all.

Mississippi State also did not hold back. From the jump, the Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning. Kentucky had to go through three different pitchers on Sunday to try and stifle them.

Although the pitching was lackluster, the rest of the defense was superb. Several Wildcats made huge defensive plays, highlighted by a diving catch from Emory Donaldson in center field.
