Kentucky Softball Shines Offensively In Midweek Win Over Marshall

Kentucky softball had a breakout performance from the batter’s box to defeat Marshall 7-3. The Wildcats were in an offensive slump the last few weeks, but looked stellar on Wednesday night in Lexington.
Lineup Changes Work For Kentucky
After struggling to find runs recently, head coach Rachel Lawson moved some players around in the lineup for this matchup. The switches led to a couple of home runs and several extra base hits.
Allie Blum moved into the third spot in the batting order to allow more base runners in front of a strong bat. The change worked as Blum started the Kentucky offense with a RBI single in the third inning.
Blum was batted in right after from a 2-run home run by Peyton Plotts. Plotts is the offensive leader for the Wildcats, coming into the game first in seven different categories including batting average, HRs, and RBIs.
Karissa Hamilton was the next batter to do damage for Kentucky. She hit her own 2-run home run in the fifth to extend the lead to five. This was much needed for Hamilton who was one Wildcat that had been struggling recently.
Ally Hutchins and Madyson Clark kept the fifth inning rally alive. Hutchins had a RBI double followed by a RBI triple for Clark. With Clark on third base, the Wildcats were one hit away from a run-rule.

The ‘Cats were unable to secure the run-rule and allowed Marshall to score three more runs in the game. Although Kentucky got their bats going, the defensive struggles continue.
Pitching has been solid for Kentucky, not too great but not an issue either. The fielding errors are where the Wildcats put themselves in tough positions.
Over the course of the season, Kentucky has lost 10 games by two runs or less. The errors contribute to runs that should never score and cost them wins. Heading into a brutal schedule to end conference play, defense could be a huge difference maker.
