In the last SEC series of the regular season for Kentucky softball, it was the most lopsided weekend the Wildcats have had all season. UK was swept by No. 5 Texas, getting run-ruled twice in between a hard-fought battle that was lost by just one run.

First Game in Austin

The Wildcats’ first attempt at a win against the Longhorns did not go as planned. Kentucky was run-ruled 9-1 in just five innings on Thursday night in Austin.

Texas is the best offensive team in the SEC, and the Longhorns showed why in the first game of the series. Texas was already leading in the third inning, but blew the game open with a grand slam. This was the first grand slam given up by Kentucky all season.

The Wildcats only earned one run in this game. Peyton Plotts hit her 15th home run of the season in the fourth inning to avoid the shutout.

Tight Saturday Matchup

Kentucky got out to an early lead in the second game of the series on Friday. In the first inning, Hallie Mitchell hit a RBI single to get the Wildcats on the board first.

Then, in the second inning, it was three straight RBI singles from Allie Blum, Plotts, and Madyson Clark to put Kentucky up by four. Unfortunately, Texas battled back in this one by hitting three straight home runs in the third inning to tie the game.

Mitchell got her second RBI of the day in the fourth inning to put Kentucky back in the lead. With her hits in this game, she brought her hit streak to 10 straight games.

Texas tied the game back up later on and then scored two runs in the sixth to overtake the lead. Kentucky was able to score in the seventh to cut the lead to one, but could not complete the comeback, losing the game 7-6 and thus the series.

Another Run-Rule

In the final game of the series on Saturday, a plethora of mistakes from Kentucky allowed Texas to run-rule them 12-3.

From the jump, Texas scored three in the first inning. Then, Texas scored seven runs in the second inning from two dropped fly balls by the Wildcats.

The official statistics had Kentucky with three errors on the day, but there were certainly more mistakes than that. The Wildcats did score three runs in the game. Plotts gave them two RBIs, finishing with a RBI in every game against the Longhorns.

It was a tough way to end the regular season, but Kentucky will travel straight to Athens to play in the SEC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
