Kentucky WBB defeats Auburn, 80-61, now 4-0 in the SEC for the first time since 2013
After two straight away games, Kentucky Women’s Basketball finally made it back to Memorial Coliseum, and rewarded BBN with a dominating 80-61 win over Auburn.
On Sunday, the ‘Cats won their eighth straight matchup and remain undefeated in Memorial Coliseum after a 19-point victory over the 9-8 (0-4 SEC) Auburn Tigers. Now, the ‘Cats are 4-0 in SEC play for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
While the first quarter wasn’t pretty, the ‘Cats managed to escape with a five-point lead heading into the second. Auburn did a good job defensively, not letting the ‘Cats have many open looks at the perimeter. In fact, Kentucky didn’t hit its first three-pointer until halfway through the second quarter. Georgia Amoore led her team in points with only four after the first ten minutes of play. Despite a combination of lackluster shooting and a couple missed free throws, Kentucky finished the first quarter with 16 points.
The second quarter was pretty similar, but looked more refined. While the ‘Cats only added 20 points to the tab, it was in a more consistent way. Kentucky shot 50% from the field and 3-8 (37.5%) from three. To end the half, Amoore tallied 13 points, while Clara Strack added 10. The center finished with 16 points on 6-8 (75%) from the field and five rebounds. Weirdly enough, Auburn outrebounded Kentucky 21-19 in the first half.

Amelia Hassett hit her first three of the day early in the third quarter. The forward finished with only three points on 1-3 from the field. She added six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. However, Auburn quickly cut Kentucky’s lead to only six after a dry period from the ‘Cats. Thankfully, Dazia Lawrence put an end to the Tigers’ 12-2 run after a corner three assisted by Amoore. She quickly nabbed a second three in a row and a layup in transition. Lawrence totaled 21 points on 8-13 FG (4-9 3FG).
Kentucky’s fourth quarter was arguably the best of the day. With a 7-0 run towards the end of regulation, Kentucky secured a victory to move to 15-1 on the season. The ‘Cats finished Sunday’s matchup 30-56 (53%) from the field and 7-21 (33%) from three after an extremely slow start. Amoore collected her first double-double since the team’s season opener against USC Upstate. The senior finished with 21 points and 11 assists.
Up next, Kentucky faces 9-9 (1-3 SEC) Georgia in Athens on Sunday, Jan. 19. The Bulldogs are coming off an 11-point loss to Mississippi State. As a reminder, the ‘Cats beat Mississippi State by 22. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. EST and can be streamed on the SEC Network+.
