Kentucky WBB guard Maddie Scherr reportedly enters transfer portal
The Kentucky women’s basketball team lacked some star power last season — and really ever since Rhyne Howard’s illustrious career came to an end. However, someone who people knew within the state of Kentucky was Maddie Scherr. Coming out of high school, Scherr was 2020 Miss Kentucky Basketball and highly regarded as one of the best prospects in the nation. The five-star guard committed to Oregon, where she would spend two seasons.
However, following the 2021-22 season, Scherr transferred to Kentucky to play for Kyra Elzy and her home state Wildcats. But now, after two seasons in blue and white, Scherr has decided to enter the transfer portal once again, as reported by Talia Goodman of TheNextHoops on Monday afternoon.
This news comes shortly after Elzy was fired by UK on March 11th.
At Kentucky, Scherr played and started in 55 games. After struggling to get going at Oregon, she quickly became one of the more dependable scorers at Coach Elzy’s disposal. In her junior season, Scherr averaged 11.6 points per game. Additionally, she averaged 5.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game, all of which were team highs.

Then, this past season, Scherr averaged a career-high 12.5 points per game which was second on the team behind Ajae Petty (14.2), who also put her name in the portal. On top of that, the Florence, KY native posted a team-best 3.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game. She also recorded 4.8 rebounds per game. Scherr would miss Kentucky’s two games in the 2024 SEC Tournament due to a concussion.
Unfortunately, her career as a ‘Cat was injury-riddled to a considerable degree. That being said, having her back in Lexington for a fifth season with a lot of uncertainty would have been a huge get. Instead, Scherr will most likely be playing her final season of college basketball elsewhere.
