Watching the scrimmage in the Blue-White Preseason Event, there were a lot of positives, but there were also a couple of things that stood out that Kentucky clearly needs to work on. However, at this point in the year (two weeks before the first game), that’s to be expected.

At SEC Media Day, Kenny Brooks acknowledged that his team is still a work in progress, but he likes what he’s seen. Having raw talent and a lot of size to go with that talent certainly helps.

“We have a long ways to go,” Brooks said. “We’re tinkering. I think it’s well-documented we’ve had a couple injuries that have had us to change how we’re going to play this year. We’re very tall, with the exception of Dazia [Lawrence] and Georgia [Amoore]. We’re going to be long, athletic. We’re going to have to try to utilize to our strength.”

Of course, outside of Amoore and Clara Strack, no one on the team has played for Brooks before. A lot of time has been spent on getting the players to learn and adjust to his system. However, Amoore, Strack and some of the upperclassmen have been pivotal as leaders this offseason.

“We got kids that haven’t played for me yet. We’re really working on that. We got great leadership. They’re looking to get better and better every day. They’re hungry. We have a lot.”

Plus, Kentucky isn’t going to be the same team on November 4th that they will be on March 2nd when the regular season comes to a close.

“We’re not going to be anywhere as good in the beginning of the season as I think we will be in the middle or the end,” Brooks pointed out. “We’re just going to continue to work hard every day and get better in all aspects.”
