Kentucky WBB is 'still feeling each other out', hence the slow starts offensively
For the first time in Kenny Brooks‘ coaching career, he has a team practically full of transfer players who haven’t learned and developed under him. 11 of the 13 players on his team are transfers, in fact. There are a lot of pieces to put together in the puzzle, and Brooks and the team are still trying to figure out how those pieces fit together, and that has no greater impact than it does offensively.
Each day in practice, Brooks is trying to figure out what sets to run, what players to put where and really anything he can do to get this team to be the best in can be offensively. It’s no secret that the offense seems to start out slow in-game, but it’s a work in progress.
“[We’re] still feeling each other out, you know,” Brooks said in the Belmont postgame press conference. “Every day, kids are proving to me that they can do this or they can do that. So, we put in about three new sets, plays this week that we wanted to try to get the basketball in different areas, to Amelia [Hassett], to Dazia Lawrence, and so it’s kind of like it’s trial and error. Let’s see if this works. Let’s go here, go there.”
It also helps that Brooks is able to make in-game adjustments too, especially with the help of his veteran players.

“But last week, when we played Purdue, we were slow,” Brooks continued. “We were a little bit hesitant because I didn’t know what they were in. I thought they were in a 3-2 [zone], and then probably four minutes into the game, Georgia [Amoore] comes over to me, and she says, they’re in a box-and-one. Then, we made an adjustment, and then we start scoring. So, that’s one of the gifts that I have, is having a coach on the floor. It’s just really stepping up and being assertive and understanding each other.”
