Welcome in to the second edition of what will be a five-part series, the KSR Kentucky Women’s Basketball Position Preview series. The name is self-explanatory. We’ll take a look at each of the five positions on the court and assess how the 2024-25 ‘Cats fare at each spot.

This time, we look at the battle at shooting guard. The two and three spots will be arguably the two most competitive position groups on this team, and in turn, will turn out to be the most pivotal heading into the season.

So, who’s more likely to actually play at the two anyway?

This is the main question surrounding the shooting guard spot. Because Georgia Amoore and Dazia Lawrence respectively are too good to keep one of them off the floor, you have to assume that Lawrence is going to adjust to playing a more off-the-ball role this season.

So, it’s likely that she is the starter there, but what happens beyond that?

Does Saniah Tyler come off the bench? Do Lexi Blue and Tanah Becker play at the two though they are more traditional wings? A lot remains to be seen there.

The most likely scenario seems to be that there is just going to be tons of fluidity at that position. Blue and Becker might play at the two if Kenny Brooks wants to go big (as he usually does), but Tyler could sort of fill Lawrence’s role off the bench too. It seems like a lot of the lineups are going to be situational, which is a good thing at its core.

Of course, with Jordan Obi being out for an indefinite amount of time, Tyler may have to be the starter at the three this season (or at least to begin the season) especially if, for whatever reason, Blue and Becker aren’t quite ready for those reps yet.

Tyler is a returning junior who averaged double-digit points last season as well, so Brooks will have to find adequate minutes for her too. Starting at the three as a major offensive threat on the wing could be the move for her.

Regardless, Kentucky’s backcourt should be one of the deeper ones in the SEC, and the position battle at the two spot should be a fun one to monitor moving forward.
