WATCH: Mark Pope, Kentucky players discuss win over Western Kentucky
It wasn’t pretty, but Kentucky’s 87-68 win over Western Kentucky moved the Cats to 6-0 and proved that they’re capable of winning by 19 on a night where the three-point shots aren’t falling. Kentucky finished 8-29 from three (27.9%), snapping the streak of games with 10+ threes. Mark Pope found the positives, especially with his team’s defensive performance, in the postgame press conference.
“It wasn’t a great offensive game for our guys but they still scored 87 points. That’s the crazy part of it, right? But on the defensive end of the floor, if we can really find joy there, and if we keep going back to the well over and over and over again, we have a chance to win. We have a chance to win and win a lot of games and win big. So I was thrilled with that tonight. It was really special. It might not be the most aesthetically pleasing thing, but it was an awesome effort on the defensive end by our guys.”
Jaxson Robinson was one of those guys who performed well on the defensive end, earning a special shoutout from Pope. Andrew Carr also got special mention for “being a star on all sides of the ball.” Carr got his first double-double as a Wildcat with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Otega Oweh tied Carr’s point total, really turning it on as the game went on.

“He’s been like clockwork,” Pope said of Oweh. “He didn’t have his best start. He’s been this incredible dynamic start-the-game guy. He was just solid to start the game. But as the game won, he got better and better and better.”
