Kentucky Women’s Basketball, which is celebrating 50 years as a program this season, will host its annual Fan Day on Saturday, September 9 — and you might already be there to meet the new-look team.

This year’s Fan Day will take place right outside of Kroger Field from 1:30-3:00 p.m. EST ahead of Kentucky Football’s Week 2 matchup against Eastern Kentucky that afternoon. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EST, so the timing works out perfectly where you can meet the Women’s Basketball team and then head straight into football mode.

All 12 Kentucky WBB players on the 2023-24 roster will be in attendance for Fan Day to sign autographs, take pictures, play games, and much more. The exact location of the event will take place at the corner of Cooper Drive and Sports Center Drive. Fans are encouraged to bring their own memorabilia if they would like something to be signed.

Kentucky WBB is entering its fourth season with Kyra Elzy running the show as head coach. Elzy has posted an overall record of 49-40 (19-28 SEC) during her run in Lexington, which includes two NCAA Tournament appearances and winning the 2022 SEC Tournament championship over eventual national champion South Carolina.

Unfortunately, the 2022-23 season left plenty to be desired for the Big Blue Nation. Kentucky finished 12-19 on the season with a poor 2-14 mark in conference play. It was the program’s worst season in roughly two decades, but 2023-24 is shaping up to be a year of improvement. Elzy returns nine pieces from last season plus the addition of two freshmen and one transfer. Notably, UK will roster five Bluegrass natives and three former Miss Kentucky Basketball winners (four if you count new assistant coach Crystal Kelly).

Headlining this season’s group is senior guard Maddie Scherr, who ended last year as the team’s best overall player. She’s a likely candidate to make Preseason All-SEC and is one of the more versatile point guards in the entire country. Scherr will be aided in the frontcourt by senior forward Ajae Petty, who showed moments of promise late in ’22-23 and has been drawing rave reviews in summer practices.

Scherr and Petty have long been expected to be among the team’s leaders on and off the floor this coming season. Considering UK made it a point to mention both players in their announcement of Fan Day, that’s a pretty telling sign. Kentucky opens the 2023-24 regular season with a home matchup against East Tennessee State on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the Clive M. Beck Center (Transylvania University) in Lexington, KY.
