Kentucky got its seventh win of the season today, beating Yale 69-59. It wasn’t the prettiest of performances, and if not for Oscar Tshiebwe‘s 28 points and 12 rebounds, we could be talking about a loss, not a win. Let’s pull up the box score to figure out what went wrong and what went right in the ten-point victory vs. the Bulldogs.

A few things that stood out to me:

  • Oscar Tshiebwe was 13-18 from the floor. The rest of the team combined was only 16-40.
  • Outside of Oscar, Sahvir Wheeler had the most field goals and attempts at 5-14. Kentucky’s shooters, Antonio Reeves and CJ Fredrick, were a combined 3-9, with Fredrick going 0-2. So, 5-14 for Wheeler, 3-9 for Reeves/Fredrick. Not great.
  • Kentucky only won the rebounding battle by one 31-30. The Cats are only the second team to outrebound Yale this year. The other? Hawaii.
  • How big of an impact did Oscar have? Kentucky had 40 points in the paint to Yale’s 18.
  • Kentucky had 15 assists to Yale’s 9, but only one of those came from Sahvir Wheeler. Jacob Toppin led the Cats in assists with 4, some of those coming when Kentucky really needed them down the stretch.
