There was no shortage of action in the final week of KHSAA football’s regular season. Four overtime games, an upset, a few thrillers and some of Kentucky’s top dogs playing their best football heading into the postseason.

Here are some notable scores and stories from Friday night:

No. 17 Lexington Catholic (8-2) def. Scott County (5-5) 41-10

1,185 total offensive yards were compiled Friday night in Lexington as the Knights and Cardinals both amassed over 590 yards of offense each. It was the first time either team had matched up since 2008.

For Scott County, they were led by Luke Colvin and Jeremy Hamilton, who combined for 321 rushing yards.

If you thought that was impressive, LexCath’s Walker Hall had 200 yards by himself on the ground, complemented by quarterback Jack Gohmann’s 281 passing yards and four touchdowns. His leading receiver was Jack Monday, who racked up 142 receiving yards.

It was neck-and-neck the whole way through—it became evident that the team to hold the ball last would come out victorious. With only a few seconds left on the clock, down 41-40, Scott County kicker Jacob Bange missed a 24-yard field goal as the clock hit zero and the Knights went home on Senior Night with a victory.

No. 7 Boyle County (9-1) def. No. 4 Frederick Douglass (9-1) 34-7

Frederick Douglass was the only team that was undefeated coming into their regular-season finale Friday night that lost. The Rebels gave Douglass their worst loss since November of 2017 and their third loss at home in the history of the program.

This was Boyle County’s game from start to finish. With three touchdowns in the first quarter and going into halftime with a 27-0 lead, the Rebels had the Broncos’ backs against the wall from the opening snap.

“We just came out here and played Boyle County football. That’s all it was,” said Rebel quarterback Jagger Gillis. “We’re not shocked at this outcome. We played our game … We stuck to the game plan and it paid off for us. We’re not surprised. We know what we’re all about.”

“We prepared for a great team. We played a great team, we came out and we executed and we came out on top,” Boyle County’s Cole Lanter said. “It was beautiful.”

After dropping their week two matchup against No. 3 LCA, Boyle County proved right before the playoffs that they’re capable of beating anyone.

Covington Catholic (7-3) def. No. 14 Ryle (7-3) 10-3

Despite Ryle out-gaining CovCath 183-173 in total offensive yards, the Colonels pulled off the upset against the northern Kentucky foe and the No. 14 ranked team in KHSAA in the regular-season finale.

CovCath scored the game’s only touchdown on a three-yard quarterback scramble by Preston Agee to cap a 50-yard drive in the third quarter.

Agee finished the game with 41 yards and the touchdown on the ground while passing for another 41 yards. The 138 all-purpose yards from Agee were enough to lead both teams.

No. 1 Male (9-0) def. No. 8 DuPont Manual (7-3) 23-0

The Old Rivalry was renewed Friday night as KHSAA’s No. 1 team in the Male Bulldogs shutout top-10 rival DuPont Manual, capping a perfect regular season for Male.

Bulldog running back Daniel Swinney carried the load with 28 carries for 134 yards and all three touchdowns against the Crimsons. He credited his detachable cleats for helping him play through the mud on Manual’s field.

Even more impressive, the Bulldog defense was kept to two totals yards of offense and just two first downs. Manual star running back Ja’Waun Northington’s eight carrier took him negative two yards on the night.

“I’m really proud of our defense,” Male head coach Chris Wolfe said. “We were really worried about their quarterback run and of course Northington. It’s a great team effort. They put in a lot of work this week, I didn’t expect us to do this well in these conditions.”

No. 2 St. Xavier (9-1) def. Bowling Green (5-5) 27-0

You can’t tell from the final outcome, but this game was closer than the scoreboard says.

At the end of the third quarter, the Tigers led 7-0. A huge final quarter put the game away that began with a Jack Sivori touchdown strike to Michael Duddy in the first minute of the fourth.

A Bowling Green fumble allowed Justin Walsh to march into the end zone from five yards out. The game was capped with a Jackson Poma pick-six.

Sivori finished with 179 all-purpose yards. His two interceptions are what kept the Purples in the game down the stretch. In the end, great teams find a way to win as No. 2 St. Xavier now heads into the 6A KHSAA playoffs on a seven-game winning streak.
