KHSAA Football Week Eight Roundup — Presented By Kroger
As we inch closer to the KHSAA postseason, teams are beginning to separate themselves from the pack. At this point, teams have found their identity and we saw that once again during week eight.
Here are some notable scores and stories from around the state this week:
Kroger KSR Game of the Week: Apollo (5-2) def. Henderson County (5-2) 21-10
Apollo picked up their first victory over Henderson County since 2001 Friday night as a part of the Kroger KSR Game of the Week.
“It’s a huge win for our program, we’re just getting started, we’re taking a one game at a time approach,” Apollo coach John Edge said. “Henderson is a good football team. We’re probably going to see each other again in the playoffs. It’s a tough district to play in.”
Apollo quarterback Christian Combs went 12-17 through the air for 158 yards with two touchdowns to go along with 41 rushing yards and a score on five carries.
Henderson County led 14-10 in the third quarter, but two straight scores by the Eagles sealed the deal to improve Apollo to 2-0 in district play this season.
Here’s the recap video:
No. 6 Boyle County (7-1) def. No. 20 Lexington Catholic (5-2) 16-10
It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win. Boyle County took their eighth-straight victory over LexCath Friday night in one of two ranked matchups in KHSAA’s week eight slate.
The Knights stopped Boyle County in the red zone on five consecutive drives and held the Rebels to just 16 points on the night. Coming in, Boyle County averaged 42 points per game.
“We didn’t finish drives in the red zone,” Boyle County coach Justin Haddix said. “And I’ll take some responsibility for some play-calling, and we turned the ball over, and we just did some things we don’t usually do. But you’ve got to win some ugly ones and some tough games, and we did.”
Rebel quarterback Jagger Gillis threw for 227 yards and ran for 41 on the ground while LexCath’s Gohmann went 13-24 passing for 218 yards, running for 41 as well. Kentucky football commit Jackson Smith tallied three field goals for Boyle County which proved to be the difference in the final score.
No. 14 Madison Central (6-1) def. Oldham County (6-1) 31-15
The Colonels’ perfect season came to an end Friday night after falling to Madison Central 31-15.
391 offensive yards from the Indians led by their three-headed monster in Brady Hensley, Hagen Harrison and Adrien Parks combined for every Madison Central yard on the night. Harrison would go 0-7 through the air before they committed 100 percent to the rushing attack.
With their victory, Madison Central has won six straight games since dropping their home opener 21-12 to No. 2 LCA—which is still LCA’s closest margin of victory on the season.
The Indians will be back in action next Friday against George Rogers Clark at 7:30 p.m. on the road.
No. 19 Pikeville (6-2) def. Sayre (6-1) 43-7
Pikeville proved Friday night that they’re still the team to beat in KHSAA’s 1A division, ending Sayre’s perfect season 43-7 at home Friday night.
Blake Birchfield continued to prove why he’s one of the top running backs in the state this season, compiling 214 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries against the Spartans.

Panther quarterback Isaac McNamee finished with 176 passing yards on 11-14 attempts and two scores while his defense allowed Sayre only 104 yards on the night.
No. 7 Trinity (2-6) def. Ballard (4-3) 20-17
Nothing comes easy for Trinity in 2021—especially not against a formidable Ballard whose only losses coming in were to No. 1 Male and No. 8 DuPont Manual.
Shamrocks’ quarterback Brady Willis is one of KHSAA’s most lethal dual-threat athletes and proved why in the first half with an 81-yard score:
Trinity would take a 17-10 lead going into the locker room and the second half would prove stagnant for both squads. A field goal for the Shamrocks in the third quarter and a big defensive stop on the final play of the game gave Trinity their second win on the season.
Trinity finished the night with 231 rushing yards compared to Ballard’s 87. 121 of their yards on the ground came from Willis, who also passed for 88 yards on 12-14 attempts.
Pulaski County (5-3) def. North Laurel (5-2) 40-16
It’s time to stop counting the Maroons out. Their three losses this season have come at the hands of ranked opponents and they are now on a four-game win streak after defeating North Laurel 40-16.
Pulaski County’s Layton Abbott showed out on defense totaling 17 tackles (eight solo) and a 48-yard pick-six. Quarterback Drew Polston continued to show why he’s one of the most efficient passers in all of KHSAA with a 22-27, 250 yard and two-touchdown performance against the Jaguars.
The Maroons have two tough matchups to round out their season with Bell County (5-1) and Southwestern (6-1). Wins in either game could see Pulaski County find their way back into KSR’s top-25—and rightfully so.
