Check out KSR’s recap from Lexington Catholic’s thrilling 28-27 victory over No. 3 Boyle County below, along with a statewide scoreboard thanks to our friends at Kroger.

Lexington Catholic Shocks Boyle County in Friday Thriller

The Lexington Catholic Knights seemed to get their swagger back on Friday Night. Boyle County came into this game riding a 19-game win streak and a #3 ranking in the latest KSR statewide rankings. The Knights were able to pull off an incredible win. The final score was 28-27, and it was a rollercoaster.

Boyle County Dominates First Half

Boyle County sophomore Montavin Quisenberry (who recently received a Louisville offer) was balling in the first half. He started the game off with a 55-yard run up the middle for a touchdown. Quisenberry decided that running the ball wasn’t enough; on the ensuing possession, he “Mossed” two defenders for a huge catch.

At the end of the quarter, the Rebels led 14 to nothing.

The second quarter brought another Boyle County touchdown. Avery Bodner pushed through the line to make it 20-0 Boyle. After this touchdown, Lexington Catholic broke through the line to block the extra point — something so small, yet had huge ramifications later.

As the half drew to an end, the Knights finally punched back. QB Jackson Wasik dropped back to pass at the Rebels’ 10-yard line, and everything was locked up. The 5’9, 140-pounder stepped up and barreled into the endzone.

Speaking on Wasik, Lexington Catholic HC Bert Bathiany praised his gusty QB: ” I can’t say enough good things about him. He’s a freaking warrior; he keeps fighting even though people continue to downgrade him because of his size. He just keeps proving people wrong.”

More on the heart later.

Lexington Catholic Strikes Back

The second half started with a Boyle County interception off Wasik. This turnover led to Montavin Quisenberry’s second touchdown of the game. The touchdown made the score 27-7; needless to say; the busses were starting to warm up.

You look down, take some notes, try and plan out your story, then BOOM. You look up, and it’s 27-21. Jackson Wasik led a comeback for the ages to put Lexington Catholic back into striking distance. In all honesty, I don’t think I saw him miss a single throw in the second half.

Regardless, the Knight defense had to step up, and step up they did. They turned Boyle County over to get the ball back with 2:29 left in the game. To get a complete grasp on the next play, we must listen to what Jackson Wasik had to say while overcome with emotions.

“We had a go route up the middle. The safety came to the right; Sam Clements was wide open through the middle. Touchdown.”

Do yourself a favor and watch the throw for yourself. You know what they say, it isn’t about the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

Coach Bathiany summarized it best: “He’s (Wasik) got a heart of a lion, I get emotional just thinking about him. It’s not just him, it’s everybody on this football team. There’s so much belief and brotherhood. We may not be the most talented team in the state, but nobody gives more effort or has more heart.

An Ending Reminiscent of Ole Miss

Boyle County got the ball back after the touchdown with less than a minute to play. Rebel QB Sage Dawson ran for a first down to about midfield. And what followed left the entire crowd stunned.

Dawson dropped back and delivered a beautiful over-the-shoulder ball to Quisenberry. He then outran one last defender to get into the end zone. The elation on the face of the Rebels turned to shock as they noticed the yellow laundry in the backfield. “FALSE START… OFFENSE” brought a roar from the crowd — no touchdown.

The Rebels had to see if lightning would strike twice. It did not… FINAL 28-27 LEXINGTON CATHOLIC. As students began to fly past to rush the field, I only had one thought, “what just happened?”.

One of the greatest football games I’ve ever seen ended the only way it could’ve, with flair.
