Are you currently a college student in the Lexington area looking to kickstart your career in sports media? Well, do we have an opportunity for you…

KSR is looking to add a new piece to our team of talented interns. We have officially opened the position of Kentucky Women’s Basketball beat writer and are currently accepting applications to fill the role. This would be an unpaid position with the opportunity to advance within KSR and our parent company, On3, and can be used for academic college credit.

So what does the role of Kentucky WBB beat writer entail? For starters, we are looking for college students who are either already involved with sports journalism or intend to be. While preferred, it is not a requirement that you have previous knowledge of the team. College enrollment is also not required, although the position will remain unpaid regardless.

After men’s basketball and football, women’s basketball is the most-followed program at Kentucky. There is an expanding market for women’s basketball coverage, and we here at KSR have been among the best at covering UK in recent years. Expectations for this role will be high, but equally as rewarding. Previous interns to cover this beat for KSR have gone on to acquire full-time jobs in sports media, including Maggie Davis (BBN Tonight), Zack Geoghegan (KSR), and Grant Grubbs (On3). This beat writer will have the opportunity to travel for postseason tournaments where they will cover the team in person.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Covering all games (home games in person) and writing recaps on a deadline.
    • Postgame coverage also includes at least one additional article aside from the traditional recap.
  • Crafting previews of each opponent that will be published the morning of game day.
  • Attending and participating in pre- and post-game press conferences (while video recording them for quotes/personal use and to post on YouTube/KSR).
  • Writing feature/opinion/quote pieces that relate to the current happenings of the team.
  • Having a firm grasp on the program as a whole, from the coaching staff all the way down to the end-of-bench players.

If you believe you meet these requirements and are interested in the position, please send an email to [email protected] attached with your resume, two sample writing pieces, your class schedule for the upcoming fall semester, and links to any/all of your social media accounts. The deadline to apply is the end of the day on Thursday, August 31.
