It’s almost here. It may not feel like it in the middle of the sticky, 100-degree heat, but the 2023 Kentucky football season is now only 10 days away. The dog days of summer are almost over.

The end of summer is marked by a few milestones. Not only are fans ready for this football drought to end, the team is tired of practicing against each other. Brad White and the Kentucky defense will share that sentiment after this afternoon’s practice. It also means we’re clearing out the final bit of KSR’s preseason catalogue. Prepare for more of that this afternoon and a miserably hot day day.

The dog days of summer are almost over. Embrace it. Week zero football is only days away.

The Latest from Kentucky Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen

We are out of the game week routine, but the Kentucky offensive and defensive coordinator are still taking some time after practice to speak with the media. On Tuesday it was Liam Coen’s turn to share insights about a few different positions. Check the Sparknotes from Luckett’s practice report:

Right Tackle: It’s still up for grabs between Jeremy Flax and Courtland Ford, but the Kentucky OC believes he has eight, maybe nine guys “who are fully capable of going in and playing for us, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be a full rotation at that point.”
QB2 is improved. Kaiya Sheron is giving Coen confidence that he can answer the bell if needed. “Definitely feel better about it than we did about a year ago or two years ago or even this spring.”
Asking more from the wide receivers. And when I say wide receivers, I mean two in particular, Tayvion Robinson and Dekel Crowdus.
Only one true freshman has cracked the rotation. And that is wide receiver Anthony Brown.

Kentucky Football Watch Lists and Snubs

Only three Wildcats were on the Coaches Preseason All-SEC team and none of them were first team selections. J.J. Weaver and Deone Walker were second team picks, while Eli Cox was on the third team offense. Those are snubs, but three other Wildcats are in contention for a prestigious honor. Jalen Geiger, Ramon Jefferson and Devin Leary have been named to the watch list for the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year Award.

11 Personnel Bold Takes at a New Time

The KSR YouTube schedule is receiving a shakeup. As you may have been able to tell by last night’s update, the practice updates are now filtering in the evening. We can’t podcast about Kentucky football while we’re talking to Liam Coen and Brad White. Instead of going Live at 5, KSR’s YouTube Channel is moving to primetime at 8 pm EST, starting tonight with an 11 Personnel fall camp recap and bold takes for the 2023 season.

In case you missed it, Sources Say continued its summer guest circuit with college basketball’s favorite punny insider, Jon Rothstein.

Great News: The New Florida Football Doc is Garbage

Netflix fired up the college football world when it announced Johnny Football and Florida Gators documentaries prior to kickoff. The first on the former Texas A&M quarterback left people wanting more. Swamp Kings has been universally panned.

As a Kentucky football fan that suffered through the Steve Spurrier blowouts, I could not coerce myself into watching a four-part series on the Gators’ run as the top team in college football under Urban Meyer. Fortunately, I do not have to because the internet has given it two big thumbs down.

Urban Meyer plays a holier than thou character on Fox. In order to talk to the former Florida and Ohio State coach, Netflix let him play his preferred role and omitted the parts of the story that everyone wanted to know more, like:

  • Cam Newton stealing laptops
  • Aaron Hernandez before he was a murderer
  • Percy Harvin
  • The Pouncey Brothers
  • Carlos Dunlap’s DUI before the 2009 SEC Championship
  • Urban Meyer’s ‘heart attack”

Netflix gave America a white washed account of Florida football. Kentucky is weeks away from giving the Gators a fourth loss in six seasons.

Extra Dose of Sandstorm

When the Wildcats hit the road this fall, their opponents are bringing out the big guns. Mississippi State is rocking alternate uniforms from their only season as SEC West champs. South Carolina is hosting Darude, the artist who created Sandstorm, for a pregame concert ahead of the matchup with Kentucky. Shane Beamer has circled this game on his calendar and he’s pulling out all of the stops to secure an improbable win.

Pass the Mayo, Please

Will Levis has been synonymous with mayo since he emerged onto stardom at the University of Kentucky, but it took a little while before he locked up an endorsement deal for the white condiment. In a mock press conference, the former Kentucky quarterback announced he has secured a lifetime supply of Hellmann’s mayonnaise, begging the question, who much mayo is too much mayo?

The timing of this story is impeccable. This week the KSBoard audience reached a surprising conclusion in a discussion on condiments. Tyler Thompson called out Zack Geoghegan for dipping his french fries in mayo. Instead of the internet rallying against mayo, it turns out that Zack’s bravery in food takes inspired others to take a stand and admit the mayo hate has gone too far. A New Member of the Kentucky Football Family

Hard Knocks shines a light on how NFL teams operate behind the scenes. It serves as a reminder that the gladiators we see on Sundays live normal lives outside the white lines. Former Kentucky Wildcat Randall Cobb shared a sentimental moment for the HBO cameras as he told his kids they will soon be big brothers.
