Good morning, folks! Today is going to be unusually entertaining for late July. First, we’re hearing from a pair of assistant men’s basketball coaches before meeting with a future Kentucky Wildcat for an interview. If any of that interests you, you’re in luck! KSR will have breakdowns of everything that happens throughout the day.

Here’s what’s going down today in the world of Kentucky sports.

Orlando Antigua, Chin Coleman take the podium

For the first time this offseason, we’ll hear from Kentucky men’s basketball assistant coaches Orlando Antigua and Chin Coleman in an official media setting. The two have spoken randomly throughout the summer at various events, but this will be our first real opportunity to sit them down and have them answer questions for 10-15 minutes. That will take place around lunchtime, and KSR will be there to provide you coverage, so expect plenty of content coming later in the day from those two.

Reed Sheppard will be in Georgetown

Kentucky commit Reed Sheppardwho is coming off a stellar performance in Las Vegas on Tuesday night in which he dropped 16 points, nine rebounds, and four assists against a loaded Strive For Greatness squad live on ESPN — is back in the Bluegrass State today for a Players First Satellite ProCamp in Georgetown at Creekside Elementary. The North Laurel product will team up with local coaches and players to lead a camp of kids in grades K-8.

As usual, that means we’ll be getting a media opportunity with Sheppard during the camp. KSR will be there as well to talk with the future ‘Cat about his trip to Vegas, his thoughts on the addition of five-star wing Justin Edwards, and much, much more.

Beau Allen hits the portal

Former Lexington Catholic star turned Kentucky backup quarterback Beau Allen will not conclude his playing career with the Wildcats. The former three-star recruit confirmed the news on social media Wednesday afternoon.

“I have the utmost respect and gratitude for Coach Stoops, his staff, and all of my coaches during my time at the University of Kentucky,” Allen wrote. “I have learned so much and I appreciate the support from so many that have been with me along the way. I also want to thank my teammates. I’ve always got your back.

“After a lot of thought and prayer, I have decided for the best interest of my football career, I will enter the transfer portal to have an opportunity to play this upcoming season. I am forever a Wildcat and I am very excited for the future.”

Sources indicate to KSR that Beau Allen is leaving the program in good standing after both sides agreed it was in Allen’s best interest to seek more opportunities elsewhere. Joey Gatewood was in a similar position last year with the ‘Cats. He was able to find a new home and receive immediate playing time at UCF. With the COVID-19 waiver, Allen could have up to four years of eligibility remaining.

Allen appeared in five games during his two-year Kentucky career. He completed 11-of-19 passes for 132 yards (6.9 yards per attempt). He also scrambled for a rushing touchdown against New Mexico State.

With Allen on the outs, Kentucky’s quarterback room is looking a little thin. Will Levis is the clear-cut starter but behind him are a trio of unproven quarterbacks: Redshirt freshman Kaiya Sheron, true freshman Destin Wade, and Iowa transfer Deuce Hogan.

Naquil Betrand pushes back decision

Three-star offensive tackle Naquil Betrand was set to make a decision on Saturday to put an end to his recruitment. However, that will no longer be the case following an announcement on Wednesday delaying the decision by a week. The three-star prospect from the Mid-Atlantic will now announce his commitment on Saturday, August 6 at 4:30 p.m. EST.

Formerly a Colorado commit, Betrand announced a fresh top five on July 15 that included Auburn, Kentucky, Penn State, Syracuse, and Texas A&M. The 6-foot-6, 320-pound offensive tackle took official visits to Auburn, Kentucky, and Syracuse in June along with an unofficial visit to Texas A&M in April.

The delay in a decision doesn’t appear to be a bad thing for the ‘Cats, either. KSR’s Nick Roush logged an RPM pick on Wednesday for Betrand to choose UK.

Get to know Antonio Reeves

Kentucky men’s basketball is returning quite a bit of talent from last season’s rosters, but of the handful of newcomers, Illinois State transfer Antonio Reeves could be the most important from day one. But unlike the two five-star freshmen in Cason Wallace and Chris Livingston, along with an intriguing prospect in Adou Thiero, we aren’t as familiar with Reeves as we are with the rest of the new ‘Cats.

Luckily, UK’s social media department has us covered.

Football Fan Day is back again this summer

Kentucky football’s annual Fan Day celebration is coming back to Kroger Field next month. On Wednesday night, UK announced that Fan Day will return on Saturday, August 6. More details are set to be released over the coming days.

That’s all the news and notes I have for you this morning. We’ve got Matt Jones and the crew coming to you live in an hour. We’ll see you then!
