KSR Today: AP Top 25 Poll Day, Kentucky Football Camp Week 3
Good morning, Kentucky Sports Radio readers. Today, Matt Jones has been on my television since 6 a.m. as he hosts the televised version of ESPN Radio with Myron Medcalf. They’re on ESPN2 until 10 a.m. before Matt flips the radio switch from ESPN with Myron to KSR with Ryan Lemond. Ryan is at Matt’s house in Louisville this morning.
In the wide world of Kentucky sports, we are one sleep closer to Kentucky Football‘s home opener at Kroger Field. By my count, we are only 19 days from the first fall tailgate, the first-ever cold beer in the cheap seats, and the first look at the 2023 Kentucky Wildcats.
Later today, maybe those 2023 will slide into the preseason poll, our first stop on the Monday morning rundown.
The Preseason AP Top 25
The biggest news of the day is the upcoming release of the AP Top 25 College Football Poll. The first version of the new year will hit internet shelves soon, revealing the AP’s preseason ranking of the best teams in college football.
Georgia is expected to be No. 1 overall, while Kentucky is unlikely to be among the 25 ranked teams when the list comes out. But the ‘Cats should find themselves just outside the party in the “receiving votes” category, likely behind South Carolina because, you know, South Carolina.
We’ll share the AP’s Top 25 here on KSR as soon as it is announced at noon.
Stoops On Kentucky’s First Fall Scrimmage
Ranked or unranked, Kentucky is back to work today on the second Monday of fall camp. The Wildcats will keep things quiet today, but Liam Coen will take questions about Tuesday’s practice and the latest surrounding UK offense tomorrow. Select offensive players will speak, too.
This past Saturday, the team played its first intrasquad scrimmage of fall camp, split between Kroger Field and the indoor training facility due to the threat of lightning in Lexington. Afterward, Mark Stoops shared all he was willing to share about the practice, which wasn’t much, per tradition. He even began his comments by saying, “You guys can probably anticipate what I’m going to say, right? You guys have been around here a long time.”
The best news? No new injuries, according to Stoops:
Highlights From Saturday’s Scrimmage
Stoops wouldn’t reveal much about Kentucky’s scrimmage, so we rely on a 39-second recap video to form our own opinions and excitement. By the looks of it, national champs? Is that expecting too much?
DJ Wagner, Rob Dillingham at Nike Skills Academy
Things are quiet on the Kentucky Basketball front, but a couple of the freshmen had a significant weekend when DJ Wagner and Rob Dillingham snuck off to Oregon for the 2023 Nike Skills Academy. At Nike, the young ‘Cats and some of their basketball peers from the college and high school ranks trained with former NBA players and skills coaches. Some of the other 14 college players included Riley Kugel (Florida), Grant Nelson (Alabama), Kel’el Ware (Indiana), and Caleb Foster (Duke), plus guys like Cooper Flagg and Boogie Fland from high school.

KSBar and Grille is Lexington’s Best Sports Bar
We are celebrating at KSBar and Grille after the Herald-Leader named KSBar its 2023 gold medal winner for Lexington’s Best Sports Bar. We edged out silver medalist Winchell’s and bronze medalist Halligan’s to maintain our spot atop the Lexington sports bar rankings another year.
See the full Best of Lexington and thank you for your continued support. We’ll be there tailgating for Kentucky games in a couple of Saturdays.
KSR Day with the Cincinnati Reds
Before KSBar is game day madness, we have a fun event at Great American Ballpark this coming Saturday when the Cincinnati Reds welcome KSR readers and listeners to the stadium. The Reds offered specially-priced tickets for KSR fans for Saturday night’s game with the Toronto Blue Jays, and though we filled up the allotment quickly, there are still overflow seats nearby in Section 106 and the sun/moon deck.
Lexington’s Southeastern U-12 All-Stars won the Cal Ripken Major/70 World Series
Congratulations to the boys of summer from Lexington, Kentucky, for running through the Cal Ripken gauntlet out in Missouri to win the entire World Series. First, Southeastern won the U.S. Championship, then beat Taiwan on Saturday for the ultimate prize.
It took some late heroics from Eli Hammons to drive in the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Listen to Kentucky Sports Radio at 10 a.m.
You know what to do. Matt Jones, Ryan Lemond, and Shannon The Dude will be live from 10 a.m. to noon from Louisville. I’ll join them there tomorrow and on Thursday and Friday.
Tune in and Go Cats.
