Somto Cyril eliminated from TBT

After former Kentucky players Archie Goodwin and Marcus Lee were knocked out of The Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, future Wildcat Somto Cyril met the same fate on Wednesday night.

Cyril and Team Overtime fell in the opening round of the Dayton Region at this year’s TBT, losing by a final score of 80-68 to Carmen’s Crew. Cyril, a four-star class of 2024 center who committed to Kentucky in late June, dealt with foul trouble all night but was able to put together a nice stretch in the fourth quarter.

Cyril finished the game with a line of four points (2-3 FG), two rebounds, two blocks, one turnover, and four personal fouls in 16 minutes. With the loss, Team Overtime is eliminated from TBT while Carmen’s Crew — a team made up mostly of former Ohio State players — advances to the second round where they’ll play again on Friday night.

It wasn’t an ideal performance from the future ‘Cat, but he did put together a handful of highlights against older, professional competition. He still made history as the first-ever amateur to play for TBT.

USWNT ties Netherlands at World Cup

It ended in a 1-1 tie, but last night’s battle between the United States and the Netherlands was one to remember. The Dutch scored first early in the opening half thanks to a defensive breakdown from the Americans, but some chippiness in the second half fueled the USA’s comeback.

A dirty tackle from the Netherlands’ Daniëlle van de Donk on Lindsey Horan — who are actually teammates at the club level — provoked the now-furious Horan and started a shoving match, ultimately resulting in her taking out that anger on the ball. Horan blasted a header into the back of the net off a corner kick to tie the score at 1-1 in the 62nd minute, which is how the final score would end. The United States had plenty of chances to steal the win down the stretch, but couldn’t muster up one more score.

“I don’t think you ever want to get me mad because I don’t react in a good way,” Horan said. “Usually I just go and I want something more: I want to win more, I want to score more, I want to do more for my team.”

The US is now 1-0-1 through two pool play games. If they can take down Portugal in the final pool match on Tuesday, they’ll move onto the knockout stage no matter what happens with the other result between Netherlands and Vietnam. The pressure is on for this young American roster.

Boogie Fland locks in 3 OVs

According to multiple reports and later confirmed by KSR’s Jack Pilgrim, Johnuel “Boogie” Fland will take three official visits in the month of September. The 6-foot-3 floor general will first visit Kentucky (Sept. 8-10) before stopping at Alabama (Sept. 22-24) and then Maryland (Sept. 29-Oct. 1). Fland has already taken a trio of official visits to North Carolina, Michigan, and Indiana. UConn and St. John’s have previously hosted him for unofficial visits, as well.

Fland is considered a five-star recruit from the class of 2024 and the No. 7 overall prospect in the country according to the On3 Industry Ranking. The Harlem (NY) Archbishop Stepinac product picked up an offer from Kentucky around this time last year.
