KSR Today: One Sleep Until The GLOBL Jam
In 28.5 hours, we will be watching Kentucky Basketball. In fact, as we speak (type?), Jack Pilgrim and Steven Peake are on their way to Toronto to bring us all the sights and sounds from the GLOBL Jam. The event will be our first opportunity to see the 2023-24 Kentucky Wildcats in action, but unlike past summer trips to the Bahamas, the competition is expected to be legit.
On Monday, we got the final rosters for the Under-23 teams from Germany, Canada, and Africa. Notable names include Simas Lukošius (Germany), one of the top wings in the transfer portal this offseason that left Butler for Cincinnati; Louisville big man Emmanuel Okorafor (Africa), who goes by @Nigerianfreak34 on Twitter; and Aly Khalifa (Africa), a 6’11” 286 center who will play for Mark Pope at BYU this year after two seasons at Charlotte.
The Kentucky Basketball team arrived in Toronto on Sunday. Since then, they’ve been practicing and taking in the sights. Monday afternoon, the players were showcased on digital billboards outside the CF Toronto Eaton Centre, a shopping complex downtown. They also held a basketball clinic for area kids.
Yesterday, the UK Sports Network Twitter account sent out this picture of the arena the Cats will be playing in, the Mattamy Athletic Centre:

Recruiting and Current Roster Scoop
Last night, Jack Pilgrim tied a bow on our Peach Jam coverage with the latest on the staff’s efforts on the recruiting trail, along with a look at what’s been happening back in Lexington. According to Jack’s sources, Reed Sheppard continues to impress, Kentucky’s backcourt is already forming chemistry, and John Welch is modernizing John Calipari’s offense. So far, things are going well with this squad, even if they take a loss or two in Toronto (remember, Baylor went 1-4 in this event last year).
The MLB All-Star Game is tonight
Tonight, the baseball world turns its eyes to Seattle for the 2023 MLB All-Star Game. The American League is going for its tenth straight win over the National League. The fun starts at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
Last night, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the Home Run Derby with 72 homers, making e and his father Vladimir Sr. the first father-son duo to win the Home Run Derby. The original Vladimir Guerrero won the event in 2007.
Day Four of the MLB Draft
In other baseball news, the MLB Draft rolls on. Yesterday, Kentucky RHP Austin Strickland became the first Wildcat to hear his name called when the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him with the No. 227 pick. Round 11 starts today, with three Kentucky significant Kentucky players still on the board: Mason Moore, Devin Burkes, and Logan Martin. Last week, KSR baseball contributor Derek Terry broke down those decisions and the impact they’ll have on the program.
ICYMI, big sports betting news
On Monday, we got a major update on sports betting in the state of Kentucky. At a special meeting of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, Governor Andy Beshear announced that Kentuckians will be able to gamble (legally) on sports on September 7, the Thursday before NFL opening weekend. Only the retail locations will open on that date, followed by mobile betting three weeks later, starting Thursday, September 28.

The KSR Football Podcast previewed SEC Media Days
Need a football fix amidst all this basketball content? Nick Roush and Adam Luckett are back from vacation, so we pulled together the KSR Football Podcast crew to preview SEC Media Days, which is next week in Nashville. It’ll be Drew Franklin’s first time at the event, so hit play below to hear Nick, Adam, and Freddie tell him what to expect as talking season heats up.
One more football note: did you see that Kentucky is naming the new playing surface at the Nutter Field House Rich and Karen Brooks Field? What a very cool honor for the former coach and his wife, who rebuilt the program and memorably lobbied for a new recruiting room, which used to occupy a single, sad corner of the Nutter Field House. Now, the house that Brooks helped built has a new life and will be ready by the time fall camp begins in August.
We had a rematch of our very first Listicuffs episode
For the second episode of the third season of Listicuffs, we held a rematch of our very first episode back in 2015, in which Drew Franklin trounced me in straight sets. Last night, I went for redemption. Did I get it? You’ll have to head on over to the KSR YouTube Channel to find out.
