KSR Today: Kentucky Derby 150, presented by NYRA Bets
Good morning, folks. It’s officially Nick Roush’s Super Bowl. The 150th edition of the Run for the Roses is almost here. Coverage of the 2024 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs begins at 2:30 p.m. EST on NBC with post time set for 6:57 p.m. EST.
We can only assume that Nick has been awake for several hours already. But how could you blame him? The city of Louisville looks to be in for some good weather today, even if it might be a bit muddy down on the infield. The renovations at Churchill Downs look awesome. I mean, come on, we’ve somehow been doing this for ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS. Let’s go have some fun at the expense of our wallets.
If you’re someone looking to make additional bets today aside from the Derby, Nick has you covered here. He also dove into some of the noticeable trends over the last few years to help you in your Derby betting, which you can find here. The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports features a $5 million purse this year.

Thorpedo Anna wins 150th Kentucky Oaks
In preparation for tonight’s first leg of the Triple Crown, the 150th annual Kentucky Oaks got the juices flowing first. On a wet and sloppy track, Thorpedo Anna brought home one of the biggest titles in thoroughbred racing, claiming the Oaks crown.
In the betting department, it was a race won by favorites. Thorpedo Anna ($10.98 | $6.06 | $4.36) went off the board at 4/1. Just F Y I (7/2) was another favorite ($5.06 | $3.98) and finished second. Regulatory Risk (29/1) helped fuel some of the exotics with a place finish.
The $2 exacta paid $38.20, the $2. The $1 trifecta paid $897.16. The $1 superfecta paid 4,275.21. Those cashing tickets were leaving Churchill Downs happy on Friday.

Pope welcomed Collin Chandler home
Let’s shift away from the Derby for a second.
For all we know, Mark Pope is just sleeping in airports at this point. Yesterday morning, Pope and assistant coach Cody Fueger welcomed home future Wildcat guard Collin Chandler at the Salt Lake City Airport following his two-year mission in Sierra Leone and London for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The 2022 Utah Gatorade Player of the Year, Chandler is a former Top 40 recruit from the 2022 class. Now, he’s ready to begin his college basketball career. Time to get back in the gym.

And it wasn’t pretty. No. 8 Kentucky baseball (33-10, 16-6 SEC) once again struggled from the bullpen, dropping the first game of its series against No. 2 Arkansas on Friday night by a final score of 10-3 at Kentucky Proud Park.
Although Kentucky has lost five of its past seven games — all to ranked teams including two top-five opponents — the Wildcats still maintains a half-game lead in the division over Tennessee with eight to play. But that could disappear quickly if things don’t turn around the rest of the weekend.
First pitch on Saturday is set for 2:00 p.m. EST on the SEC Network+. For more on Game 1, check out Daniel Hager’s recap here.
Men’s Tennis onto NCAA Round 2
On Friday night in Lexington, No. 5 Kentucky men’s tennis (25-2) swept DePaul (14-10), 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Boone Tennis Complex. The Wildcats had zero issues disposing of the Blue Demons, winning its 18th consecutive match along the way. Below are the results.
The Wildcats will look to go even further in the postseason later today against Illinois — the No. 2 seed in the Lexington Region — at 4:00 p.m. EST. Live stats and streaming will be available, including a whip-around broadcast on the Cracked Racquets YouTube channel.
