KSR Today: Offense day for Kentucky football
Game prep for Ball State is well underway at the Joe Craft Football Training Facility. Kentucky is chomping at the bit to play a real football game for the first time since New Year’s Eve, and Big Blue Nation is ready to hit the parking lots at Kroger Field for some breakfast tailgating.
Football is back in the Bluegrass. We are all ready for Saturday to get here for a Labor Day weekend filled with football. All eyes are on the end of the week.
This evening, KSR’s Nick Roush will have boots on the ground on campus when offensive coordinator Liam Coen and a few players field questions from the media. Expect to hear more about Ball State’s defense and where things stand on offense heading into a big Week 1. KSR will have a full practice report coming your way later today.
For now, we’re going to take a look back at Monday to recap what was learned at Mark Stoops’ first press luncheon of the 2023 season.
Kentucky’s first depth chart is “or” heavy
To no one’s surprise, Kentucky did not reveal too many secrets with its first depth chart of the 2023 season. As expected, or was the word of the day for the Wildcats with many players sharing spots on the depth chart.
However, you could say there were some mild surprises. Vanderbilt transfer Ray Davis is the clear RB1. Redshirt freshman Brandon White made an appearance at punt returns. There was a short snapper and a long snapper.
On the injury side, Ohio State transfer Ben Christman was noticeably absent at guard. We learned quickly that the redshirt sophomore will be out of the season and that will hurt Kentucky’s depth.
UK was somewhat secretive but not as near secretive as Alabama. Nick Saban refused to provide a depth chart for the Tide’s Week 1 game against Middle Tennessee as a quarterback battles rolls on in Tuscaloosa. Elsewhere, Tom Allen at Indiana and Neal Brown at West Virginia know who their starting quarterback will be but refuse to make it public.
It’s hide information time in college football. We will find out most of the secrets soon when the games begin this weekend.
Mark Stoops speaks and KSR reacts
KSR cameraman extraordinaire was on the scene to capture Mark Stoops’ full press conference and after headed into the stadium to record Nick Roush and me bloviate about what we just learned. Later on Monday night, The KSR Football Podcast jumped into our virtual studios to record another live show. Each video has been uploaded to KSR’s YouTube Channel.

But there was more than just talking going on in the KSR compound. We were also cranking out the written content after a busy day at Kroger Field. We’ve got a morning reading list for you to get caught up to speed with the Cats.
