KSR Today: Otega Oweh Decision Day

This is a familiar feeling for Kentucky basketball fans. It’s NBA Draft Withdrawal Deadline Day, and we don’t know if one of the Cats’ top guards will be staying for another year or departing for the professional ranks.
Otega Oweh has until midnight to remove his name from NBA Draft consideration. Nobody left BBN hanging longer than Hamidou Diallo. He did not play as a freshman after arriving in January, then waited as long as he possibly could have before letting Kentucky fans know that we would actually get to see him suit up.
Jaxson Robinson took it one step further. He proved that tonight’s midnight deadline is not a hard deadline, kind of like the ones we operate under over at KSR. Robinson’s name was in the transfer portal when the midnight deadline came and went. It took until the following afternoon to receive confirmation that Robinson was staying in college and transferring from BYU to Kentucky.
Hopefully, Oweh does not toy with the emotions of Big Blue Nation for much longer. Throughout most of this process, we’ve operated under the assumption that he was returning. CBS’ Matt Norlander confirmed that on Tuesday, while noting NBA teams have given Oweh, “some really, really good feedback in the past four or five days.” Mark Pope echoed that in a conversation with Darrell Bird at the SEC Spring Meetings, adding that Oweh has one more workout today, so the announcement may not come before midnight.
Otega Oweh looks like one of the best players in college basketball next season. Will Kentucky get good news from a future All-American? Let’s cross our fingers and hope the day ends with a jubilant Kentucky basketball celebration.
Noteworthy Names Removed from the NBA Draft
Unlike Oweh, there were a few big-time players who didn’t want to wait until the NBA Draft deadline to announce a decision.
Alex Condon will be teaming up with Boogie Fland at Florida. Another Final Four participant, Milos Uzan, is back at Houston, giving the Cougs a shot to be the preseason No. 1 team. Mark Pope tried to get Yaxel Lendeborg to Kentucky. For a time, the rebounding machine looked destined to leave for the NBA, but he will spend one more year in college at Michigan. Elsewhere around the SEC, Karter Knox is locked in for another year at Arkansas, while Mackenzie Mgbako is signed on for next season at Texas A&M.

The Woodford Legends Invitational 3rd annual tournament showcases the talents of some of the biggest names in the history of the LPGA Tour teeing it up alongside top female amateur golfers from the state of Kentucky. This unique two-woman team event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 7–8, 2025. The week of family-friendly events will begin on Tuesday, June 3, and culminate in the main tournament on the weekend. The event takes places at The Woodford Club in Versailles. Nick Mingione spoke with the media on Tuesday ahead of this weekend’s tournament, and the Kentucky baseball coach could not contain his emotions. “I’m here to tell you that I’m super proud of this team, and I say team because of what they’ve accomplished.”
SEC Spring Meetings Continue
The SEC Spring Meetings have turned into a mini-SEC Media Days. On Tuesday, pretty much every coach spoke with the national media, with one exception, Mark Stoops. The only news we got from Kentucky on Tuesday was that offensive line coach Eric Wolford received a contract extension.
The SEC Spring Meetings did produce plenty of big-picture talk from the coaches and ADs. There is momentum to move the transfer portal. SEC coaches prefer January, but there’s little consensus elsewhere. We also had more CPF format talk while the league is put in purgatory by the House settlement delay.
Important College Football Rankings
You won’t see Kentucky on all of the preseason Top 25 rankings, but do those even matter? I’ll tell you a ranking that matters, The Power Buccee’s Rankings.
Those rankings are almost as ridiculous as the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll. I first learned about this unusual English tradition in the Netflix Documentary We Are The Champions. Dating back as far as 1826, a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese is rolled down this incredibly steep hill. The race is a dangerous spectacle, and this year we got an all-time tumble. What a wonderful world.
Shai Looking to Punch Finals Ticket
The Pacers got one step closer to the NBA Finals on Tuesday night by taking a 3-1 lead over the Knicks. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder can secure their spot in the Finals first. The Thunder return to OKC with a 3-1 advantage as 8.5-point favorites over Minnesota. Tip-off is at 8:30 PM ET on ESPN.
