Good morning, KentuckySportsRadio.com readers. Today is a special day around KSR HQ because Matt Jones will make his return to the KSR airwaves at 10 a.m. As many of you know, Matt took a 10-week summer vacation to recharge his batteries, leaving the show in the trusty hands of the rest of the crew and special guests. After landing back in the States on Friday, Matt will make his long-awaited return to the radio show at KSBar and Grille this morning. He will have plenty to say, so tune in.

Here are other headlines for your Monday morning:

Kentucky Football’s preseason training camp continues

With Media Day and Fan Day behind them, the Kentucky football team will continue fall training camp with the first full week of preseason practices. The Wildcats will keep things quiet over at the Joe Craft Training Facility on Monday. Tomorrow, we’ll hear updates on the offense from Bush Hamdan after Tuesday’s practice.

If you’ve missed their work so far, enjoy this 10-minute video from Saturday’s open scrimmage at Fan Day.

What to watch in the Olympics today

A couple of former Wildcats have already participated in Monday’s Olympics events, with even more to come. First, Andrew Evans competed in the men’s discus throw qualifier, although his throw of 62.25 meters wasn’t enough to advance.

After Evans, former Wildcat Alexis Holmes ran a 50.35 in the first round of the women’s 400-meter in Paris, good enough for second. Holmes moved on to the semifinal on Wednesday.

Rhyne Howard and the USA 3×3 Women’s National Team will compete in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Riding a five-game win streak, the Americans play Spain in their first game of the day, followed by the bronze and gold medal games later this afternoon at 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Sunday’s 100m final was insane

Aside from the horrible commentary that declared the wrong winner, the men’s 100 meter was electric. American Noah Lyles took gold over Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson in a photo finish, running a personal-best time of 9.79 seconds to bring America its first 100m gold in 20 years. Thompson was five-thousandths of a second behind him.

Lyles never led until the last steps. This image of the race shows how close it was:

Scottie Scheffler, still the best golfer in the world

Scottie Scheffler’s run as the best golfer in the world continued Sunday in Paris, where he shot a bogey-free 62 in the final round to come from behind and win the gold medal. Scheffler trailed the leader, Jon Rahm, by four strokes through the first three rounds at at Le Golf National, only to complete the improbable comeback and win the gold by one stroke in the end. Tommy Fleetwood (Great Britain) and Hideki Matsuyama (Japan) took silver and gold, while Rahm finished fourth.

Checking in on that medal count

The United States has a big lead in the overall medal count, but China leads with two more golds.

Carmen’s Crew won The Basketball Tournament

La Familia’s run in The Basketball Tournament came up short as the team of Wildcat alums lost to Carmen’s Crew in the semifinal round last Friday night. On Sunday, Carmen’s Crew finished the job, winning the championship game and the $1 million prize.

After the tournament, three members of La Familia earned recognition: Kerem Kanter was named to the All-Tournament Team as a player, Twany Beckham as a manager, and Willie Cauley-Stein was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Deone Walker interested in a walk-on spot with UK Basketball

Last Friday, Mark Pope announced open tryouts for a walk-on spot on Kentucky Basketball’s roster. At least one student on campus showed interest: Deone Walker, Kentucky’s standout defensive lineman on the football field, tweeted the eyes emoji in reply to news of the tryout.

At 6-foot-6, Walker has the height but his 345-pound frame may be too much to get up and down the floor. He also has a promising NFL career to protect after the 2024 season with UK Football.
