Good morning, folks! After a surprising amount of snow at Kroger Field on Saturday, today is looking to be about as perfect a spring day that anyone could ask for across central Kentucky. Let’s dive right into the news and notes you need to know ahead of your Sunday.

Blue-White Spring Game recap

As you might have heard, Mother Nature wasn’t too kind to Lexington on Saturday — which was the opening weekend day of Keeneland on top of the Spring Game. (Side note: did anyone pull off the doubleheader?) But a faithful crew of the Big Blue Nation braved the elements as the sun eventually came out to save the day. They were presented a pretty fun show, too.

Will Levis and Chris Rodriguez picked up right where they left off from last season, immediately charging down the field for a 65-yard touchdown to open up the game. Lexington native Beau Allen came in for the second series at quarterback but didn’t see much production. Levis came back in and got the offense rolling again, tossing balls to Virginia Tech transfer Tayvion Robinson and freshman Dane Key (ever heard of him?), the latter of whom hauled in a 22-yard score.

Allen had a much better stretch with the ones in his next series out with Key snagging another 20-plus yard reception. Levis and Rodriguez were done for the day at this point as the rest of the QB room, including Kaiya Sheron and Duece Hogan, saw reps in the second half. Boyle County walk-on wide receiver, Cole Lanter, also got in on the action, but I’m not sure which was better: his touchdown, or the celebration?

DJ and Reed shining on the circuit

One Kentucky commit and another top target began their final AAU season this weekend with statement performances. Starting with the one still on the board, five-star class of 2023 combo guard DJ Wagner averaged 24.3 points on 53 percent shooting for the NJ Scholars (EYBL) this weekend. UK head coach John Calipari and the rest of the Wildcat coaching staff were on hand to watch Wagner throughout.

They got to see a pretty impressive poster, too.

Suiting up for Midwest Basketball Club in the season-opening 3SSB event in Noblesville, IN, Kentucky commit Reed Sheppard scored nine points in an all-around effort on Friday. He followed it up with a 13-point performance to start the day on Saturday, then closed out the night with an impressive 28-point effort in a triple overtime loss. Each performance was more impressive than the one before, growing more confident and thriving in his role with each game.

Another five-star recruit high on Kentucky’s big board, five-star wing Justin Edwards performed well in front of Calipari for Team Final (EYBL), putting up 23 points and 13 rebounds on 9-13 shooting on Saturday.

Softball ‘Cats tackle doubleheader

Kentucky Baseball dropped its road series against Texas A&M over the weekend, but the Softball ‘Cats will have a shot at redemption on the diamond today.

After Saturday’s mid-series matchup against Ole Miss was canceled due to poor weather conditions, it was quickly rescheduled to a Sunday doubleheader. Already down a game after falling in the series opener on Friday, Kentucky will face the Rebels this morning at 10:00 a.m. EST at John Cropp Stadium with game two set to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. The first outing will be broadcast on the SEC Network while game two switches over to the SEC Network+.

As part of the schedule changes, a recently postponed contest against in-state rival Louisville has been set for this Tuesday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. EST at Ulmer Stadium.

Final day of The Masters

Tiger Woods is down, but he’s not all the way out as we enter the final round of the 2022 Masters Tournament.

Okay, so he’s technically 16 strokes back of the leader, Scottie Scheffler, but the fact that Woods made it this far in the tournament is enough to celebrate, in my opinion. If you’d like to watch Tiger make his impossible comeback attempt, he tees off at 10:50 a.m. EST alongside Jon Rahm (+7).

The leaders will tee off at 2:40 p.m. EST.

Abby Steiner makes more history

Abby Steiner continues to cement her legacy as an all-time great at Kentucky.

The senior sprinter ran the fifth-fastest 100-meter dash in collegiate history on Saturday with a time of 10.92 seconds. But even more impressive, she broke the collegiate record for the fastest 200-meter dash with a headwind over 1.7 m/s. Steiner’s 100m finish set the Kentucky program record, her fifth overall, while her 200m time of 22.38 seconds was second-fastest.

Masai Russell, Molly Leppelmeier, and the women’s 4x400m also turned in impressive performances at LSU, while Tori Herman led the distance runners at the Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Mississippi.

The Wildcats had nine event wins and 28 personal bests between the two meets.
