KSR Today: The Last Day Without Football
Wow. We’ve made it. Today is the last day without college football. Week zero was just an appetizer for. Starting tomorrow the world will receive five straight days of college football. It’s going to be glorious.
The wait has taken a personal toll on this blogger. It felt like summer sped by, particularly the busy recruiting month of June, then once talking season arrived, the month of August has slowed to a crawl. As arguments over preseason predictions escalate online, they’ve gotten more and more ridiculous. For everyone’s sake, we need the games to start. The good news is the wait is almost finally over.
Kentucky has a Starting Right Tackle
It was just an “OR” on Monday’s depth chart. Tuesday night Zach Yenser just went out and said it. Jeremy Flax will receive the first snaps on Saturday when Kentucky kicks off the season at Kroger Field.
“Definitely going to get them all reps. Flax is going to start the game for us as the depth chart said, then we’re going to get in Courtland (Ford) in quick, just like they have been. They’ve been going every three reps at practice, really since Courtland got here in the summer,” said the UK offensive line coach.
This position battle is far from over, but Flax earned the right to see the field first. The USC transfer will still see plenty of action as the Big Blue Wall sorts out who is best on the right side of the line of scrimmage.
Interviews from Kentucky Football Practice
This evening it’s Brad White‘s turn to talk to the media. Before we get one final defensive update, Liam Coen and Devin Leary spoke behind the podium before KSR snagged interviews with Ray Davis, Dylan Ray and Cole Lanter.
One Guy Not Playing College Football this Fall
Remember Arik Gilbert? He was a five-star prospect and the No. 5 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class. He had a decent debut for Coach O in 2020, then transferred to Georgia. Kirby Smart kept a tight leash on Gilbert, who only saw in action in three games over two years. He made the move this offseason for greener pastures in Nebraska. While awaiting a hearing from the NCAA on his eligibility status, he decided to rob a liquor store. Technically, it was a liquor and vape store. He stole $1,600 worth of goods and there’s video of the incident from security cameras. It’s a sad, disappointing development for a player who had all of the potential in the world.

The Latest on Two Injured Ball State Players
Brady Hunt is one of the top returners on the Ball State offense. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound tight end was second on the team in receiving touchdowns, hauling in five touchdowns while catching 46 passes for 498 yards. He’s been in a walking boot this week, and according to Gus Martin, Hunt did not practice on Tuesday. Neither did starting defensive end Tavion Woodard. However, the Cardinals’ plan is still for each to play Saturday afternoon at Kroger Field.
Kentucky Wildcats Make (and Miss) the Cut
Tuesday was NFL cut day and a few Cats on the fringe just missed out. DeAndre Square was one of the final cuts for the Rams. He’s expected to be on the practice squad and be one of the first to get called up following a defensive injury. A few others that got some bad news on cut day:
- Baltimore Ravens waive OL Tashawn Manning
- Cincinnati Bengals waive S Yusuf Corker
- Chicago Bears waive OL Logan Stenberg
- Cleveland Browns waive CB Chris Westry
- Dallas Cowboys waive NT Quinton Bohanna
- Detroit Lions waive RB Benny Snell
- Kansas City Chiefs waive OT Darian Kinnard and DL Phil Hoskins
- Los Angeles Rams waive DE T.J. Carter
- Miami Dolphins waive S Keidron Smith
- New England Patriots waive CB Quandre Mosley
- New Orleans Saints waive WR Lynn Bowden
- Tennessee Titans waive TE Justin Rigg
As for the good news, Wan’Dale Robinson was taken off the PUP list despite suffering a season-ending knee injury in November. Josh Ali made the Falcons’ roster and Kelvin Joseph was traded from the Cowboys to the Dolphins.
