Kyra Elzy met with Maddie Scherr following bad outing against South Carolina
While we’d all like to forget that the 62-point defeat to South Carolina ever happened, it was unfortunately a bump in the road that the Kentucky women’s basketball team had to deal with. And for Maddie Scherr specifically, it was definitely a game that she would like to forget.
Scherr would score just nine points on 3-19 (1-6 3PT) shooting while committing five turnovers. Additionally, Scherr’s -59 +/- was by far the worst on the team against the Gamecocks.
Simply put, she didn’t have a good game, and head coach Kyra Elzy took notice of it.
Trying to “free her up” offensively
After Kentucky bounced back to beat Missouri over the weekend, Kyra Elzy revealed that she met with the senior guard following her poor performance in Columbia. The focal point of their discussion involved trying to find more efficient looks for Scherr and letting her work with the ball in her hands.
“Maddie and I met. Maddie’s a talented player, and when we met, I just wanted to free her up. Let her loose, play basketball,” Elzy said.
Now, talking about Scherr’s turnaround on Sunday, Elzy continued, “When the shot’s open, take it. If it doesn’t feel good to you, trust your instincts on the court. I thought she came out aggressive offensively. We needed it. But really, I’ve challenged her to rebound. Her ability to rebound kept us in the game.”
Against Missouri, Scherr was not only great scoring the ball, but she was great all-around as well.

She would finish with 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocks against the Tigers. Despite fouling out with 1:45 left to go in regulation, the senior had done enough to help her team get the W. For the 37 minutes that she was in, she was en fuego.
Next up on the schedule is Arkansas, who Scherr didn’t have a great game against either when they met on January 4th. She would only score three points after not taking a single field goal. Plus, she fouled out late in the game and committed six turnovers. It was a weird game for her, to say the least.
However, her performance on Sunday could have been the first sign of a potential revenge game come Thursday night.
