We can share all of the information available on the internet. We can break down film and stats, show you pictures from his Instagram account and all sorts of nonsense, but we cannot paint a clear picture of what Brock Vandagriff is bringing to his next team. That’s why we asked an expert who knows him well.

Rusty Mansell from On3’s DawgsHQ was the first to report that Vandagriff would enter the transfer portal. He met the quarterback when Vandagriff was in the seventh grade and has an even longer relationship with his father, Greg Vandagriff, who coaches high school football 20 minutes outside of Athens, Ga. As Kentucky pursues the former Top 25 talent, Mansell believes the quarterback has all of the tools to be successful at his next stop.

“The first thing you’ll notice if you see him in person, is he’s a big ass kid. He’s 6’3 legit. He’s got a freaking live arm. He is mobile. He is put together. What Brock Vandagriff lacks is why he is leaving Georgia and that is live snaps. Point blank,” Mansell said.

“I was told he had a very good conversation with Kirby Smart yesterday. I would imagine if you had Kirby Smart on here, he would tell you everything you want to hear about a kid like Brock Vandagriff, he just didn’t win the job. That’s just part of it. He’s going somewhere to get live snaps. That’s what he needs, live snaps.”

Vandagriff Checks Boxes

When evaluating transfer portal quarterbacks from afar, there is a certain checklist you go through. Can he run? What’s his arm like? How many years can he play? How much has he played? Vandagriff satisfies almost every need.

“I can’t sit here and say it enough, the dude checks boxes. He needs live snaps,” said Mansell.

When watching Vandagriff operate throughout his time at Georgia, something was slightly off when he was on the field. That can be corrected with a fresh start at a new school.

“When you watched him in spring games and stuff like that, obviously he was pressing because he was trying to gain ground. He was trying to win that job. He’s never walked in a building on a Monday as a quarterback and you’re staring down an SEC game on Saturday knowing, ‘I’m the guy. This is my team, I’m here. I’m just preparing for this team. I’m not looking over my shoulder.’ There’s a lot of that variable to him, but the one thing is he’s won.”

Mansell believes Kentucky is in a good spot to land the former five-star talent and he’s eager to see how much progress Vandagriff makes once he finally receives the reins of an offense.

“I truly think Brock, wherever he ends up — and I certainly think Kentucky is a real threat here, not saying it’s a done deal, but Kentucky is a real threat in this thing — wherever he ends up, I’m very fascinated from August of this year and where he will be in two years from now when he leaves college because there’s a lot of ceiling left in this kid.”

Mansell goes into detail about why Vandagriff lost the competition to Carson Beck, he shares insight into his athletic family and much, much more.
