Monday afternoon the Big Blue Nation received a pleasant surprise when Tre Mitchell announced a transfer from West Virginia to the University of Kentucky. After seeing the initial news on Kentucky Sports Radio, countless Wildcat fans went to Google to learn more about their new forward.

Instead of seeing a 6-foot-9, versatile big man, they saw this guy, the Strongest Man in America.

This is Trey “Big Tex” Mitchell. Also known as “The Big Thicket,” this Trey Mitchell is one of the top strongman athletes in the world.

Standing 6-foot 4-inches tall and weighing 370 pounds, Mitchell is an elite weightlifter from Lumberton, Texas. The 29-year-old makes a living moving larger than life objects. He grew up in the generation that spent summer mornings watching strongman competitions on ESPN. Now he’s dragging Gravedigger down the road.

Big Tex had his big break in 2018 when he won the America’s Strongest Man competition in Long Beach, California. He now competes on professional strong man circuit. Trey Mitchell has tallied three wins in 19 international competitions, most notably back-to-back victories in the 2021 and 2022 Shaw Classic.

The World’s Strongest Man and “The Arnold” are the two premiere events in the sport. This year he finished fourth in each. He’s made the finals of the World’s Strongest Man in four of the last five years.

He may not have the touch that Kentucky’s Tre Mitchell has from behind the three-point line, but he does have enough muscle to move weight in the paint. More specifically, Big Tex has no trouble lifting big rocks.

If you wanna know what it takes to be a strongman, Trey Mitchell took a YouTuber through a Texas leg day and it includes multiple BBQ dinners before ever hitting the gym.
